PROVO, Utah – The Central Washington women's rugby team (1-1) earned their first win of the season defeating the BYU Cougars (0-1) on Saturday by a 22-12 score from Helaman Field.
"What a game," CWU Head Women's Rugby Coach Matt Ramirez said. "Full credit to Coach Whippy and BYU. They kept us pinned in our own 22 meter for the first 25 minutes of the game."
The Wildcats got on the board 23 minutes into the game to take the 5-0 lead with
Kai Brandt-Templeton tacking on the conversion to put CWU up 7-0. The Wildcats struck again a minute later to see their lead grow to 12-0. At the 33-minute mark the Wildcats punched another try in to increase their lead to 17-0 which would remain the score at halftime.
CWU only needed four minutes in the second half to increase their lead with another successful try, putting the crimson and black up 22-0. BYU would get on the board in the 57
th-minute and would complete the conversion to make it 22-7 in favor of CWU. The Cougars struck again with three minutes left in the game making it 22-12, but the Wildcats would prevail for the win.
"The team got settled back in the moment and started to attack," Ramirez said. "Both Emma and Georgia put in great shifts in the front row. Jenn worked her tail off and was rewarded with her first score as a Wildcats. Lilly and Vivianne are pairing nicely on the edge with speed to burn. We asked a lot of the squad on defense this past week in preparation, and to see the response the team had was great. I'm extremely proud of the team."
