SCOUTING THE BUFFALOES

The Buffs are amid a 3-4 season, 2-3 in LSC play in head coach Josh Lynns first season at the helm. WT split their nonconference schedule falling first to now ranked Western Colorado 28-6 on the road before bouncing back for their first win against Adams State 28-7. The Buffs opened LSC play with a bang, shutting out Midwestern State 23-0 at home before falling at UTPB in overtime 41-40. The bad luck kept rolling for the Buffs falling 37-36 at home against Western Oregon the next week followed by a 28-21 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville. West Texas A&M received their third win of the season last season in a 49-27 homecoming victory over Western New Mexico. This will be the Buffs first visit to Ellensburg since the 2018 season.

West Texas A&M has rushed 70 times more than they've passed but have gained more yards in the air (1,155 yards) than on the ground (1,011 yards). Kanon Gibson has been the go-to quarterback for WTAMU completing 105 of his 147 passes for 996 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Tyler Sweet has been the target of choice racking up 21 receptions for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Tyrie Thompson and Shakell Brown have each made 16 receptions with both scoring two touchdowns, but Thompson leads the yardage battle 201 to 76. Kenneath Redd Jr. has been explosive on his 12 receptions gaining 179 yards and two touchdowns.

Tray'vian McCoy-Gay has been the leading back for WT rushing 91 times for 450 yards and three touchdowns. Gibson isn't afraid to sacrifice his body with the rushes, being second on the team in rushing attempts with 61 and running for 282 yards and four touchdowns. Isaiah Smallwood has also had a solid season rushing 58 times for 193 yards and one touchdown.

The Buffs defense is headlined by the two-headed monster that is Jimmy Harrison and JT Cavender. Harrison is slightly leading the team in tackles with 65 compared to Cavenders 63. Harrison has accumulated eight tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Koby King leads the Buffs with nine tackles for loss and is tied for the most sacks with Iziek Soper at 2.5 apiece. WT has forced three interceptions this year and forced four fumbles. Cade Cox has been stellar blocking kicks, blocking three of the teams four kicks already this season.

Preston Gregg has converted seven of his 12 field goal attempts this year with his longest coming at 49-yards. Gregg has also had 40 kickoffs for 2,476 yards for an average of 61.9 yards per kick. 22 of his kickoffs have resulted in touchbacks. Seth Ford has 28 punts so far this season for 1,112 yards for an average of 39.7 yards. 11 of his punts have landed in the opponents 20-yard line and none have resulted in touchbacks.

"They play a similar defensive philosophy," CWU Head Football Coach Chris Fisk said. "They're still a 3-4 front, which they were a year ago. It's quite a bit different than what West Texas did in the past defensively. It presents a defense that we haven't seen the whole year, so we'll have our hands full making sure that our blocking patterns and the things that we need to do to be successful moving the football will be a tremendous challenge this week. Offensively, a little bit different than what they've done before. A little bit more of a triple-option, run play-option team, and is very effective in the play-action passing. They have quality quarterbacks that has the ability to get to their outstanding tight end or the very real skill at their skill positions when needed. It's a journey of a team that's similar to what we saw a week ago, a team that's kind of been up-and-down offensively, but consistent defensively. They have a big defensive line that we'll be going against, I think their starting nose guard is 350 pounds, so we have some work cut out for us as we go and play another quality Lone Star Conference opponent."
