Wildcats Complete Weekend Sweep with 66-58 Victory over Stan State

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Central Washington women's basketball team (3-2) won their third-straight game Saturday afternoon in a 66-58 victory over Stanislaus State to conclude the Wildcats participation in the CCAA-GNAC Crossover, hosted by Cal State East Bay. Asher Cai posted a 20-20 leading all scores with 24 points while grabbing 21 rebounds.
 
Today's victory marks the 100th victory for CWU Head Coach Randi Richardson-Thornley as the Wildcats head coach.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

QUOTING HEAD COACH RANDI RICHARDSON-THORNLEY:

"I'm very proud of our group for gutting out another win. It's a good spot for us right now, that our defense is sustaining us. Our offense will come along, but this group showed a lot of toughness and composure in big moments this weekend. Now it's onto the recovery battle to get us prepared for another big game on Tuesday."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sunny Huerta got the Wildcats on the board first, dropping a jumper for the early 2-0 lead.
  • The Warriors wouldn't have it going on an 11-0 run over the first five minutes of the game to take the 11-2 lead with 5:53 left in the first quarter.
  • Annalee Coronado started the comeback for the Wildcats with a layup that was backed by a three-pointer from Huerta to make it a 11-7 Stan State lead with 3:14 left in the first quarter.
  • A three-pointer by Malia Smith was responded by a layup from the Warriors that saw the score at 13-10 in favor of Stan State to end the first quarter.
  • Cai got on the board to open the second quarter, and to cut the Warriors lead to one, 13-12.
  • The Warriors would drain a three-pointer to get on the board in the second quarter, but Cai immediately responded with a three of her own to keep it a one-point game, 16-15 Stan State.
  • A pair of free throws by Shelby Blodgett put the 'Cats back on top, 19-18 with 5:52 left in the second quarter.
  • The Warriors would regain the lead, seeing it grow to four twice before the first half ended, but a pair of free throws and a layup by Cai tied the game at 31 apiece to end the first half.
  • The Warriors came out of halftime draining a three-pointer to retake the lead, 34-31.
  • Jumpers by Sims and Cai and a layup by Huerta put the 'Cats back on top, 37-36 with 4:59 left in the third quarter.
  • The Warriors would tie the game at 41, but Capri Sims would drain a three-pointer sparking a 6-0 run by the Wildcats who led 47-41 with 1:03 left in the third quarter.
  • Both teams traded a bucket as the Wildcats maintained a six-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes, 49-43.
  • Stan State opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a bucket to cut the Wildcat lead to four, but a pair of free throws by Huerta followed by a layup from Blodgett ballooned the Wildcat lead to eight with 8:53 left in the fourth.
  • A Cai layup gave the Wildcats a double-digit lead, 55-45, with 6:10 left in the game.
  • Stan State wouldn't go away quietly draining a three-pointer and forcing the Wildcats into turnovers which cut the crimson and black lead to five with 3:27 left in the game.
  • Clutch free throws down the stretch by Sims and Cai kept the Wildcats out in front by six with 1:13 to go.
  • The Warriors came alive, draining a three-pointer and a free throw to make it a 60-58 Wildcat lead with 1:03 left in the game.
  • The buckets stopped falling for the Warriors as they sent the Wildcats to the free throw line which saw Coronado, Cai, and Huerta all hit clutch free throws as the Wildcats went on to the 66-58 victory.
STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Cai led all scores and rebounds with 24 points and 21 rebounds to go with her two assists.
  • Huerta netted 13 point sand two rebounds.
  • Sims added eight points, 12 rebounds, one assist, and all four of the Wildcat steals.
  • Coronado tacked on seven points, one rebound, and two assists.
  • Smith came off the bench and contributed six points and two rebounds.
  • Blodgett had four points and five rebounds.
  • Keira Marsh put up two points, two rebounds, and three assists.
  • Tori Maeda had two points and four rebounds.
  • The Wildcats shot 33.9 percent from the floor, 20 percent from three-point land, and 91.3 percent from the free throw line.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • This was the ninth-ever meeting between the Wildcats and Warriors with the Wildcats owning a 7-2 record over Stan State and are currently riding a six-game winning streak.
  • The Wildcats are 5-1 against Stan State in neutral venues.
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will have another pair of tough challenges this upcoming week for their home opener.
  • The Wildcats will first welcome Cal State Los Angeles (1-0) for a Tuesday night showdown inside Nicholson Arena at 7:00 p.m.
  • The Wildcats will then play host for a game between Northwest Nazarene (0-1) and Westmont (1-1) who will play each other on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. from Nicholson Arena.
