Poquette’s Putback Gives ‘Cats 77-75 Victory Over Red Leafs

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Central Washington men's basketball prevailed 77-75 against Simon Fraser in a down to the wire contest Thursday night.

QUOTING HEAD COACH BRANDON RINTA
"That was a big putback by Matt at the end of the game to get us the final lead. He came up with big plays all night long. All five of the starters took turns carrying us offensively. Our defense was great in the first half, but we let them get too comfortable in the second."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Isaiah Banks brought the energy to start the game along with eight straight points which gave the 'Cats the 25-10 lead.
  • The Wildcats ended the half on a 7-2 run to take the 48-31 lead into the break. Isaiah Banks scored 14 points and Matt Poquette added 11, Mitch Brizee dominated the paint scoring 10 points in the first half.
  • Central Washington outshot Simon Fraser shooting 66.7% from the field to SFU's 56.5%.
  • Banks opened the second half with a jumper as the Wildcats stretched their lead to 53-37 with 17:33 remaining.
  • Next, the Red Leaf's mounted a comeback. Elliot Dimaculangan nailed a three to cut the deficit to eight and with 4:22 left Jahmal Wright knocked down a jumper in the paint bringing the deficit to five, 66-71.
  • Camron McNeil put the 'Cats up 75-70 making two clutch free throws with 1:33 remaining.
  • On the next possession, David Penney hit a three from the left elbow bringing the Red Leafs within a bucket. Dimaculangan got fouled, went to the line, and hit two clutch free throws to tie the game at 75 with 19 seconds left.
  • With six seconds remaining Camron McNeil drove in and missed a layup, but Matt Poquette was there to convert the putback which gave the Wildcats a 77-75 advantage with 2.3 seconds to go.
  • Dimaculangan's half court heave went in and out, and Central Washington walked away with the 77-75 win.

  • The Wildcats scored 48 points in the paint and 16 from Simon Fraser turnovers.
  • Camron McNeil led four Wildcats in double figures scoring 19, Mitch Brizee put up 18, Isaiah Banks had 16, and Matt Poquette chipped in 15.
  • Elliot Dimaculangan led Simon Fraser scoring 21 points, Jahmal Wright put up 18, Nigel Hylton contributed 16 points off the bench, and David Penney added 13.
