Wildcats Open the 2023 Home Season With Sweeping Victories

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington softball team opened their home season with a pair of wins against NAIA opponent the Corban Warriors by an 11-0 score in game one and a 7-2 score in game two at the Gary and Bobbi Frederick Field.

"We played well today and got contributions from a number of people which is important if we're going to be successful this year. We also had two well pitched games from Izzy and Ashlee which was great to see."
 
Game 1
 
SCORING:
 
  • Kate Hopkins singled to right center field allowing Harlee Carpenter to advance to third while Karsyn Decker scored. 
  • Alyssa Benthagen flied out to center field allowing Hopkins to advance to third and Carpenter to score. 
  • Allie Thiessen bunted to the pitcher allowing Hopkins to score. 
  • Makenna King singled to right field allowing Taylor "TK" Kai to score which was followed by an error by the right fielder allowed Thiessen to score. 
  • In the second inning Benthagen nailed a double to center field allowing both Hopkins and Carpenter score.
  • In the third inning Carpenter sacrificed herself by grounding out to the second baseman allowing Laney Kaysner to score.
  • The fourth inning provided the final scores for the Wildcats as Heidi Heytvelt singled to center field allowing Sasha Mitchell to advance to third and TK to score, followed by Serena Perez singling to left field allowing Mitchell to score. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Isabel Womack had herself a second straight complete game that resulted in a shutout.
  • Womack allowed three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts against 19 batters. 
  • Alise Olson took the loss for the Warriors, giving up five hits, five runs, one earned against eight batters faced. 
  • Madison Russell pitched a majority of the game for the Warriors, facing 21 batters while allowing six hits, six runs, four earned, and seven walks.
  • Amy Jankowski also saw the mound for Corban facing one batter.
 
HITTING: 
 
  • The Wildcats finished with 11 hits and 11 runs with 22 at-bats.
  • CWU only left seven runners on base and struck out ZERO times.
  • The Warriors finished with only three hits, while leaving four runners on base. 
 
GAME 2
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Wildcats struck first in the second inning as King doubled down the left field line bringing Brooke Jordan home.
  • The Warriors responded the following inning when Morgan Gleeson reached on a fielder's choice as Sarah Parker beat out the tag at home. 
  • The Warriors notched another score shortly after when Chas Walch singled to center field allowing Josie Landis to score. 
  • The Wildcats immediately responded in the fourth when King doubled to right center allowing pinch runner Cady Wilton to score. 
  • Carpenter sacrificed herself allowing King to score from second and Decker to advance to third. 
  • A double by Thiessen brought home Decker.
  • Benthagen singled to right field allowing Thiessen to score. 
  • The Wildcats got back on the board in the fifth inning when King singled to left center field allowing Hannah Hvitved to score, which was followed by Hopkins grounding out to second base allowing Jillian Hampson to score. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Ashlee Laver had herself a complete game as well pitching all seven innings.
  • Laver finished allowing six hits, two runs, two runs earned, three walks, four strikeouts, from facing 29 batters.
  • The Warriors split their pitching in the second game with Emmaleena Wood starting the game and going 3.2 innings while allowing eight hits, five runs, five earned runs, four walks, one strikeout, while facing 21 batters.
  • Van Hulett-Quinones did relief duty for 2.1 innings allowing two hits, two runs, two earned runs, and three walks while facing 12 batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished the game with 10 hits with seven runs with 25 at-bats.
  • CWU left eight runners on base, while being struck out only once. 
  • The Warriors finished with six hits while leaving five runners on base. 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will head back on the road for a nonconference showdown with a very familiar opponent when the Wildcats will play a two-day slate next Saturday and Sunday of double-headers against Western Oregon at the WOU Softball Field in Monmouth, Ore. with first pitch for both days game one set for 11:00 a.m. with first pitch of each second game to happen a half an hour after the conclusion of the first game. ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington softball team opened their home season with a pair of wins against NAIA opponent the Corban Warriors by an 11-0 score in game one and a 7-2 score in game two at the Gary and Bobbi Frederick Field.
