Wildcats Can't Find Hitting Stride in Pair of Setbacks to Open Season

IRVINE, Calif. – The Central Washington softball team opened their season with a pair of setbacks in the CUI Kick-Off Classic, first a 4-1 setback to Cal State Monterey Bay followed by a 3-1 setback to San Francisco State. 
 
QUOTING HEAD COACH JOE DiPIETRO:
 
"Well, it was a tough day. We just didn't hit the way we're capable of. Hopefully tomorrow will be better!"
 
GAME ONE:
 
  • The Otters took the lead in the second inning from an Alyssa Burt single as Ally Alcayaga scored.
  • CSUMB continued their scoring run in the second inning when Burt and Abby Alcayaga scored on an Ashley Honorio single. 
  • The Wildcats finally got on the board in the sixth inning to put them back in the game when Sasha Mitchell flied out to center field and Alyssa Benthagen scored from third. 
  • The Otters wrapped up the scoring and securing their victory in the top of the seventh inning when Ivana Perez scored on a Gracie Strycula single. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Isabel Womack gave up four runs with three of them earned, walked five batters, and had six strikeouts against 34 batters. 
  • Both pitchers from both teams pitched every inning. 
  • Womack finished the game after pitching 139 pitches. 
  • Kassidy Stetler of CSUMB finished the game after pitching 123 pitches. 
 
Hitting: 
   
GAME TWO: 
 
  • The Wildcats struck first in the top of the first inning as Benthagen doubled allowing Hopkins to score. 
  • The Gators responded in the third inning as Kai DeLeon doubled allowing Marley Gonzales to score tying the game at one apiece.
  • The Gators took the lead in the fourth inning from a Wildcat error as Kira Nilson ran in from second base. 
  • Later in the fourth inning the Gators tacked on the final run of the day as a sac bunt scored Teya Vincent from a fielder's choice to second base. 
PITCHING:
 
  • Ashlee Laver pitched for six innings allowing three runs, one earned, one walk, and two strikeouts against 23 batters. 
  • Both pitchers for both teams completed the game from start to finish.
 
UP NEXT
 
  • The Wildcats will be back in action in the CUI Kick-Off Classic when they play another pair of games, first against Cal State East Bay at 11:00 a.m., followed by a matchup against Azusa Pacific at 4:00 p.m.
