Wildcats Drop a Pair at the CUI Kick-Off Classic on Day Two

IRVINE, Calif. – The Central Washington softball team dropped a pair of games at the CUI Kick-Off Tournament at Great Park, first dropping an 8-3 decision to the Cal State East Bay Pioneers before a 19-0 loss to the Azusa Pacific Cougars in the second game. 
 
 
GAME ONE:
 
  • The Pioneers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead to end the first inning. 
  • Sasha Mitchell doubled out to center field which advanced Jillian Hampson to third base and allowed Allie Thiessen to score from third in the second inning.
  • Immediately following Mitchell was Makenna King singling down the right field line allowing Hampson to score and for Mitchell to advance to third. 
  • The Pioneers responded in the third after the bases were loaded as they doubled scoring all three base runners extending their lead 8-2. 
  • The Wildcats got back on the board in the sixth inning as Laney Kaysner grounded out to the second baseman allowing Mitchell to go to third and Hampson to score. 
 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Payton Kessler had a rude awakening to open her collegiate pitching career allowing five runs with four of them earned in 0.2 innings pitched, had one walk while facing nine batters and delivering 38 pitches.
  • Makayla Miller came in to pitch the remaining 5.1 innings allowing three runs, one strikeout, one walk, facing 23 batters, and finished with 78 pitches.
  • Lex Palmon received the win pitching five innings while only allowing two runs, three walks, three strikeouts, while facing 24 batters, and delivered 86 pitches.
 
 
HITTING: 
 
  • Thiesssen and King each finished the game going two for three at the plate. 
  • Mitchell went one for one at bat for the 'Cats. 
  • Taylor "TK" Kai and Kate Hopkins each had a hit for the 'Cats. 
 
 
GAME TWO: 
 
  • The Cougars got on the board early on having themselves a 10-run first inning. 
  • APU added two more runs in the third inning.
  • The Cougars continued their onslaught by adding three more runs.
  • APU rounded out the scoring by adding one more run in the fifth inning.
 
 
PITCHING: 
 
  • Isabel Womack started the game for the Wildcats, pitching two innings, allowing 13 runs, eight earned, three walked, two strikeouts, and 23 batters faced.
  • Freshman Brina Baysinger came in to pitch 1.2 innings while allowing five runs, one earned, and one strikeout while facing 12 batters.
  • Makayla Miller came in to pitch 1.1 innings, allowing one run, and one walk while facing nine batters.

UP NEXT:
 
The Wildcats will wrap up their participation in the CUI Kick-Off Classic tomorrow with a showdown against reigning national runner-up, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros with first pitch set for 9:30 a.m. on field two at Great Park.
