Wildcat Softball Wraps up Series Against Cal Poly Humboldt with Split

LOLETA, Calif. - The Central Washington softball team (9-10) had two hard fought games to wrap up their series against Cal Poly Humboldt (6-12), first a 1-2 setback in eight innings before bouncing back for the 8-3 victory in game two. 

GAME 1

SCORING:

 
  • The 'Jacks nabbed the first score of the game when Ciera Pyle grounded out to the shortstop bringing Anna Brondos home to put the 'Jacks up 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Wildcats responded immediately in the top of the 6th when Sasha Mitchell reached on a fielding error by the shortstop allowing Makenna King to make it home safely.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning the 'Jacks wrapped up game one when Micaela Harris singled up the middle bringing McKenna Beach home.

PITCHING:
 
  • The Wildcats relied on Ashlee Laver the full seven innings as she only allowed four hits, two runs, one earned run, and one walk while getting five strikeouts against 28 batters.
  • Gaige Garcia led the 'Jacks on the mound once again going the full eight innings and allowing four hits, one run, and three walks while getting four strikeouts against 31 batters.

HITTING:
 
GAME 2

SCORING:
 
  • Humboldt once again struck first as Saltos doubled to left field in the bottom of the second bringing Shelby Shanks home.
  • Kaysner responded in the top of the third by singling allowing Hampson to skirt home to tie the game.
  • The 'Jacks retook the lead in the bottom of the third when Pyle scored on a passed ball.
  • The Wildcats would immediately tie the game in the top of the fourth when Benthagen recorded her second homerun of the season in left field.
  • The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth as Benthagen would nab a single bringing Allie Thiessen home to make it 3-2 in favor of CWU.
  • The 'Jacks wouldn't go away quietly as they would find the tying play in the bottom of the sixth when Saltos singled to left center bringing Brondos home.
  • The Wildcats then went on a tear in the top of the seventh inning started first when Thiessen singled to center field bringing King home but an error on the throw by the center fielder allowed Kaysner to also round third to home making it a 5-3 game. 
  • Kate Hopkins would get in on the RBI action as she sacrificed herself to the shortstop allowing Carpenter to make it home.
  • Myiah Seaton would nail a single up the middle allowing Thiessen to score, which was followed by Mitchell drawing a walk bringing Benthagen home to round out the scoring.

PITCHING:
 
  • Isabel Womack pitched the full seven innings only allowing nine hits, three runs, two earned runs, and three walks but getting five strikeouts against 32 batters.
  • Vanessa Richie started the game for Humboldt going 3.1 innings and allowing four hits, two runs, and two earned runs, while getting two strikeouts against 13 batters.
  • Alyssa Smokey would rack up the loss in coming in and pitching three innings and allowing two hits, three runs, two earned runs, and four walks but got two strikeouts against 15 batters.
  • Ava Hand and Garcia also saw action in the final inning.

HITTING:
 
  • Central Washington finished with eight hits with five different batters recording a hit.
  • Kaysner, Thiessen, and Benthagen each recorded two hits apiece while Seaton and Hampson each gathered one hit in the game.
  • The 'Jacks finished with nine hits with one player recording three and another player recording two hits, respectively.

UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will head back to Ellensburg to start their GNAC schedule with a four-game series against the Western Washington Vikings next Saturday and Sunday with first pitch on both days set for noon and game two to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one each day.
