ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington Softball team (11-10, 2-0 GNAC) welcomed arch-rival the Western Washington Vikings (11-11, 3-3 GNAC) to open GNAC play Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory in game one followed by a 14-5 five inning victory in game two.
QUOTING HEAD COACH JOE DIPIETRO:
"Playing Western you need to be at the top of your game and today I think the girls responded. I think there's some things we need to improve on but overall a good day. Ashlee was very good again in Game 1 and Alyssa came up big. Team effort in game 2."
GAME 1
SCORING:
- Alyssa Benthagen nabbed her third homerun of the season watching the ball go over the right center field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning.
PITCHING:
- Ashlee Laver had herself another phenomenal performance pitching a complete game while only allowing three hits and two walks, but getting three strikeouts against 26 batters.
- Mareena Ramirez pitched a complete game for the Vikings allowing one hit, one run, one earned run, and three walks while getting five strikeouts against 23 batters.
HITTING:
- The lone hit of the day came from Benthagen nailing her homerun.
- The Vikings finished with three hits, led by Amaya Davis with two.
GAME 2
SCORING:
- Unlike the first game game two was filled with scoring, starting right off the bat in the bottom of the first when Allie Thiessen doubled to left center brining Laney Kaysner home, which was followed by Benthagen singling to left field which Thiessen was able to use to skirt home.
- The Vikings would respond in the top of the second inning when Davis singled down the left field line allowing Isabel Cargill to run home.
- The bottom of the third inning proved to be one of two four-run innings for the 'Cats on the day started when Myiah Seaton homered to left field brining Benthagen and Thiessen home in the process.
- Kaysner singled to left field with the bases loaded allowing Makenna King to come home. Thiessen followed it up with a single up the middle which brought Brooke Jordan home.
- Seaton would round out the scoring of the inning doubling to right field brining Thiessen and Kaysner home upping the Wildcat lead to 10-1.
- The Vikings wouldn't go away that easily as Taylor Khorrami would single to right field brining Rachel Christensen home, while Lexi Barcomb reached on an error from the first baseman which allowed Khorrami to score.
- The Vikings tacked on one more still in the bottom of the fourth as Hailey Rath doubled to right center bringing Barcomb home cutting the Wildcat lead to 10-4.
- The Wildcats wanted to make sure to put it away in the bottom of the fourth as Kaysner singled to left field which brought Jillian Hampson home.
- Benthagen came in clutch in a bases loaded situation as she singled to right field brining Karsyn Decker home which was followed by a Seaton walk allowing Kaysner to walk home scotch free.
- Makenna King would wind up the scoring for the Wildcats singling to right field allowing Thiessen to score.
- The Vikings would get the final score of the day as Kinzey Williams singled to left field bringing McKenna Crum home for a 14-5 final score in favor of CWU.
PITCHING:
- Isabel Womack received the start on the day and went two innings allowing only one hit, one run, one earned run, and six walks, against 13 batters.
- Payton Kessler relieved Womack going the final three innings and allowing five hits, four runs, and one walk while getting two strikeouts against 16 batters.
- Alexis Slater started the game for WWU going two innings allowing four hits, five runs, five earned runs, and three walks while getting two strikeouts against 14 batters.
- Hanako Hirai relieved Slater going the final two innings allowing 10 hits, nine runs, nine earned runs, and four walks, while getting two strikeouts against 21 batters.
HITTING:
- The Wildcats finished with 14 hits on the day.
- Thiessen and Benthagen each finished with three hits while Kaysner and Seaton each had two.
- King, Jordan, Hampson, and Decker each finished with one hit.
- The Vikings finished with six hits led by Davis with two.

- The Wildcats and Vikings will square off in the series finale double header with game one set to start at noon, and game two to start approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one from Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field.
