Wildcats Earn Day One Sweep at the Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Central Washington softball team (15-14) opened up day one of the Tournament of Champions with a pair of defensive victories, first with a 2-0 victory in game one over the Hawaii Pacific Sharks (17-23) and a 4-1 victory in game two over the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans (10-19).

PITCHING:
 
  • Ashlee Laver pitched another complete game, going all seven innings and allowing six hits and two walks while getting one strikeout against 28 batters.
  • Gianna Kerschbaum pitched a complete game for the Sharks going six innings and allowing six hits, two runs, two earned runs, and three walks, while getting seven strikeouts against 26 batters.

SCORING:
 
  • The only scoring in the game happened in the third and seventh innings, as Laney Kaysner sacrificed herself by grounding out to the shortstop which allowed Hampson to skirt home.
  • Still in the third, Thiessen does it again, but sacrificing herself in the process as she flied out to left center which allowed Karsyn Decker to run home to make it a 2-0 lead.
  • In the top of the seventh Kaysner does it again, singling to left field and advancing on an error which gives Hampson enough time to slide into home making it a 3-0 game.
  • Harlee Carpenter triples to right field which brought Kaysner home making it a 4-0 lead for the Wildcats heading to the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Vulcans wouldn't go away quietly as Lexie Tilton doubled to left field which allowed Rayna-Marie White to score, ending the scoring of the day.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Isabel Womack pitched a complete game for the Wildcats going all seven innings and allowing four hits, one run, one earned run, and seven walks but got six strikeouts against 31 batters.
  • Alexis Lacy pitched a complete game for the Vulcans going all seven innings and allowing seven hits, four runs, and three earned runs while getting six strikeouts against 29 batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished with seven hits on the day led by Kaysner with two.
  • Carpenter, Thiessen, Benthagen, Hampson, and Decker all recorded a hit in the win.
  • The Vulcans finished with four hits with four different players recording a hit.
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will continue with day two of the Tournament of Champions tomorrow when they play the Academy of Art Urban Knights and the San Francisco State Gators. The game against the Academy of Art is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. on field one while the game against SFSU is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on field three.
