Wildcats Sweep Red Leafs Behind Benthagens Three Homeruns

BURNABY, B.C. – The Central Washington softball team (19-23, 7-11 GNAC) had to earn their sweep of the Simon Fraser Red Leafs (8-33, 2-16 GNAC) Monday afternoon as both games went to eight innings. The Wildcats took game one by an 11-6 score and followed it up with a 10-4 victory in game two.
 
GAME 1
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Wildcats started the scoring early in the top of the first as Alyssa Benthagen homered to left center bringing Allie Thiessen and Harlee Carpenter home as well for the early 3-0 lead.
  • The Red Leafs responded in the bottom of the second as Amy Hughes sacrifice flied out to left field bringing Megan Duclos home making it a 3-1 game.
  • The Red Leafs cut into the Wildcat lead in the bottom of the second as Caitlin Zagari homered to center field making it a 3-2 game.
  • Benthagen singled up the middle bringing Carpenter home in the top of the third making it 4-2.
  • Carpenter singled to left field bringing Sasha Mitchell home for the 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • In the top of the fifth Janique Balcaen flied out to the center fielder allowing Duclos to run home making it 5-3.
  • Still in the top of the fifth Laura Winters singled to center field bringing Abby McGlynn home, which was followed by Zagari doubling to center field allowing Kristen Davyduke to tie the game at five apiece.
  • In the top of the eighth inning Brooke Jordan singled to right field bringing Laney Kaysner home.
  • TK singled through the left side allowing Jordan to make it home, followed by Ashtyn Falor flying to the center fielder allowing Jillian Hampson to score to make it an 8-5 game.
  • Thiessen reached on a fielders choice to the shortstop allowing Makenna King and Mitchell to both score, followed by Myiah Seaton singling to left field allowing Carpenter to score making it an 11-6 score.
  • The Red Leafs got the final score as Duclos singled to second base allowing Zagari to score putting the final score at 11-6.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Ashlee Laver pitched a complete game for CWU, going the full eight innings and allowing 13 hits, six runs, six earned runs, and two walks while getting two strikeouts against 39 batters.
  • Julia Hansen received the start for SFU going 7.1 innings and allowing 10 hits, eight runs, eight earned runs, and two walks while getting two strikeouts against 33 batters.
  • Nevada Johnson came in for Hansen and pitched the final 0.2 innings and allowed two hits, three runs, and a walk against seven batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished with 12 hits led by Carpenter and Benthagen each with three.
  • Jordan had two hits while Thiessen, Seaton, Mitchell, and TK all recorded a hit apiece.
  • The Red Leafs recorded 13 hits as Duclos, McGlynn, and Zagari all had three apiece to lead SFU.
 
GAME 2
 
SCORING:
 
  • Once again Benthagen started off the scoring with a homerun, this time to right field making it a 1-0 game in the top of the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the fifth the Red Leafs responded as Cassidy Affeldt homered to center field tying the game at one apiece.
  • The Wildcats retook the lead as Benthagen nailed another homer to left center making it a 2-1 lead.
  • SFU would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth as Balcaen fouled out to the left fielder which gave Hughes enough time to make it home to tie the game at two apiece.
  • The Wildcats struck gold once again in the top of the eighth inning started by Seaton doubling to left center allowing Carpenter to score, followed by Mitchell singling to left center which allowed both Serena Perez and Seaton to score for the 5-2 lead.
  • Kaysner singled up the middle which brought Jordan home, followed by a passed ball allowing Mitchell to score making it a 7-2 game.
  • Thiessen nailed a triple to center field bringing Kate Hopkins, Kaysner, and Hampson home making it a 10-2 game.
  • The Red Leafs wouldn't go without a fight as Hughes tripled to right center allowing Duclos to score, followed by McGlynn grounding out to the shortstop allowing Hughes to score putting the final at 10-4.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Payton Kessler pitched a complete game going all eight innings and allowing six hits, four runs, and three earned runs, while getting five strikeouts against 31 batters.
  • Shaneika Hollingworth got the start for SFU going 7.1 innings and allowing 10 hits, seven runs, seven earned runs, and one walk while getting one strikeout against 33 batters.
  • Reese Davies came into the game and allowing one hit, three runs, three earned runs, and two walks against three batters.
  • Julia Hansen pitched the final 0.2 innings allowing one hit and two walks against five batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished with 12 hits in the game.
  • Thiessen, Benthagen, Mitchell, and Karsyn Decker all recorded two hits to lead CWU.
  • Carpenter, Seaton, Hampson, and Kaysner all recorded a hit.
  • The Red Leafs finished with six hits with McGlynn getting two to lead SFU.
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats and Red Leafs clash again tomorrow with a first pitch set for noon with game two to follow approximately a half an hour after the conclusion of game one.
