BURNABY, B.C. – The Central Washington softball team (20-24, 8-12 GNAC) wrapped up their series with the Simon Fraser Red Leafs (9-34, 2-18 GNAC) with a split, first falling on a last inning homerun by a 3-4 score before bouncing the Red Leafs in game two by a 10-1 score in five innings.
GAME 1
SCORING:
- Alyssa Benthagen once again started the scoring for CWU, in the top of the third she singled up the middle allowing enough time for Allie Thiessen to score for the 1-0 lead.
- Still in the top of the third TK singled to right center which allowed Benthagen to score making it a 2-0 lead for CWU.
- The Red Leafs responded in the bottom of the third when Avery Barker hit a homerun to left field making it a 2-1 game.
- TK added on in the top of the seventh inning, scoring on a passed ball making it a 3-1 game.
- The Red Leafs weren't done as Abby McGlynn hit a three-run homerun to steal the game for the Red Leafs 3-4 in the bottom of the seventh.
PITCHING:
- Ashlee Laver pitched another complete game for CWU, going 6.1 innings and allowing nine hits, four runs, one earned run, and one walk against 30 batters.
- Julia Hansen got the start for SFU going 4.2 innings and allowing seven hits, two runs, two earned runs, and three walks while getting three strikeouts against 25 batters.
- Shaneika Hollingworth pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing two hits, one run, and two walks while getting a strikeout against 11 batters.
HITTING:
- The Wildcats finished with nine hits as Thiessen and TK each recorded three.
- Sasha Mitchell, Jillian Hampson, and Benthagen all recorded one hit apiece.
- The Red Leafs finished with nine hits as well led by Amy Hughes and McGlynn with two apiece.
GAME 2
SCORING:
- The Wildcats got their first score of the game when Karsyn Decker was walked with the bases loaded which brought Benthagen home for the 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
- The third inning saw the 'Cats do a lot of damage, starting when Benthagen singled to single field allowing Myiah Seaton to score.
- Hampson then reached on a fielder's choice which led to Benthagen scoring on a muffed throw by the catcher.
- Ashtyn Falor got in on the walk party as her walk allowed Mitchell to score for a 4-0 lead.
- Harlee Carpenter then singled up the middle which allowed Hampson and TK to score making it a 6-0 lead.
- Seaton put the dagger in the game when she grand slammed to center field bringing home herself, Thiessen, Carpenter, and Decker making it a 10-0 score.
- The Red Leafs would get the final score in the bottom of the third as Janique Balcaen reached on a fielding error by the third baseman which allowed Barker to score for the 10-1 final.
PITCHING:
- Payton Kessler pitched another complete game for CWU allowing five hits, and one run while getting two strikeouts against 21 batters.
- Hollingworth started the game for SFU going 2.1 innings and allowing seven hits, five runs, two earned runs, and one walk against 15 batters.
- Nevada Johnson pitched the final 2.2 innings for SFU allowing three hits, five runs, and four walks while getting one strikeout against 16 batters.
HITTING:
- The Wildcats finished with 10 hits.
- Seaton, Benthagen, Mitchell, and TK all recorded two hits apiece to lead CWU.
- Carpenter and Thiessen each had one hit in the game.
- The Red Leafs finished with five hits as five different players finished with one hit.
UP NEXT:
- The Wildcats will head back to Ellensburg to wrap up the regular season with a four-game series that could have potentially big implications on the GNAC Tournament for CWU against the Saint Martin's Saints (23-14, 10-7 GNAC) this Saturday and Sunday at Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field. Saturday will also be Senior Day with the Wildcats recognizing four seniors for their hard work and accomplishments as a Wildcat.
