Wildcats and Saints Split on Senior Day

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington softball team (21-25, 9-13 GNAC) took a senior day split with the Saint Martin's Saints (26-16, 13-9 GNAC) to open the final series of the regular season, first defeating SMU by a 7-6 score in 12 innings before falling 7-9 in game two.
 
Congratulations to the four seniors celebrated today; Harlee Carpenter, Janelle Gary, Isabel Womack, and Myiah Seaton on their stellar careers, and thank you for everything you've contributed to the Wildcat softball team!
 
GAME 1

SCORING:
 
  • Central Washington got on the board in first, in the bottom of the first inning when Sasha Mitchell reached on an error by the first baseman which allowed enough time for Carpenter to score making it a 1-0 score.
  • The Wildcats increased their lead when Carpenter sacrificed herself to the right fielder allowing time for Jillian Hampson to score putting the 'Cats up 2-0.
  • The Saints tied the game up in the top of the fifth when Shay Lopes homered to left field bringing Kekai Schultz home in the process.
  • The Wildcats immediately broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth when Hampson was walked with the bases loaded bringing Seaton home putting the 'Cats up 3-2.
  • The Saints tied the game once again when Britney Patrick doubled down the left field line allowing Shelby Lawson to score making it a 3-3 game in the sixth.
  • It would prove to be a back-and-forth affair between the two clubs from the 10th inning on as the Saints got the ball rolling first when Haley Agena singled to left center which scored Olivia Schmidt putting the Saints up 3-4.
  • The Wildcats would tie it up in the bottom of the 10th when Laney Kaysner singled to right field which allowed Mitchell to score.
  • In the top of the 11th the Saints retook the lead when Schultz flied out to the center fielder which allowed Patrick to score putting SMU up 4-5.
  • CWU would once again tie the game, this time in the bottom of the 11th as Alyssa Benthagen reached on a fielding error by the second baseman which allowed Carpenter to make it a 5-5 game.
  • The Saints once again would retake the lead in the top of the 12th as Agena singled down the left field line allowing Lopes to score making it 5-6 in favor of SMU.
  • The Wildcats wouldn't go quietly as Hampson doubled to left center which brought Elise Allen home from third to tie the game.
  • What a better way to end a game than for the senior Carpenter to single to left field which would bring Hampson home for the 7-6 victory.
PITCHING:
 
  • The Wildcats would get a full 12 innings out of Ashlee Laver as she allowed nine hits, six runs, two earned runs, and one walk over that span, while getting six strikeouts against 48 batters.
  • The Saints started Tia Ridings as she would go 4.1 innings and allow four hits, three runs, two earned runs, and four walks while getting four strikeouts against 24 batters.
  • The Saints reliever Chloe Leverington came in and pitched seven innings allowing six hits, four runs, one earned run, and two walks while getting 12 strikeouts against 31 batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats would finish with 10 hits in the game, led by Carpenter with three.
  • Hampson and Kaysner each recorded two hits, while Allie Thiessen, Karsyn Decker, and Benthagen each recorded one hit apiece.
  • The Saints finished with nine hits as Agena led SMU with three.
 
GAME 2
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Saints started the scoring right off the bat in the first inning as Patrick would fly out to the left fielder allowing Agena to score for the early 0-1 lead.
  • The Wildcats would match that in the bottom of the first as Hampson was walked with the bases loaded bringing Seaton home, making it a 1-1 game.
  • The Saints would tack on more in the top of the second as Vanessa Smoke reached on a fielder's choice which advanced Lawson to third, but a throwing error by the first baseman allowed Lawson to score.
  • Still in the top of the second Lopes sacrificed herself to allow Olivia Matlock to score, making it a 1-3 lead for SMU.
  • The Saints would do more damage in the top of the third as Lawson would single to the shortstop allowing time for Patrick to score.
  • Matlock would then homer to left center which brought Lawson and Rylee Gaudia home with her making it a 1-7 lead for the Saints.
  • The Wildcats wouldn't go down without a fight, starting in the bottom of the third when Benthagen singled to right field allowing Seaton to score.
  • Hampson would then single up the middle which brought Benthagen home, which was followed by Brooke Jordan scoring on a wild pitch to end the third with the Wildcats down 4-7.
  • The Wildcats tacked on once more in the bottom of the fourth as Hampson reached on a fielding error which allowed Thiessen to score cutting the deficit to 5-7.
  • The Saints would add the dagger in the top of the sixth when Destiny Conerly flied out to the center fielder allowing Schmidt to score making it 5-8 SMU.
  • The Wildcats would try and rally as Benthagen singled to center field allowing Seaton to cut the deficit to 6-8.
  • The Saints tacked on one more in the top of the seventh as Marisol Bergstrom scored on a wild pitch making it 6-9 Saints.
  • The Wildcats started brewing in the bottom of the seventh as Carpenter doubled to right center which allowed Kate Hopkins to score, but it wouldn't be enough as the 'Cats fell 7-9.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Payton Kessler started the game for CWU going 2.1 innings and allowing seven hits, seven runs, and five earned runs against 17 batters.
  • Womack would relieve Kessler for the final 4.2 innings allowing two hits, two runs, two earned runs, and four walks against three strikeouts against 19 batters.
  • The Saints started Abby Runyon who went 2.2 innings and allowed five hits, four runs, three earned runs, and four walks while getting three strikeouts against 18 batters.
  • Ridings would relieve Runyon going 3.2 innings and allowing six hits, three runs, two earned runs, and one walk while getting four strikeouts against 19 batters.
  • Leverington would pitch the final 0.2 innings and get one strikeout against two batters.
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats and Saints will clash for one more double-header tomorrow to wrap up the regular season with first pitch for game one set for 1:00 p.m.
