‘Cats Defeated by Nighthawks in Game One of the GNAC Tournament

LACEY, Wash. – Central Washington Baseball suffered an 8-5 setback to Northwest Nazarene in game one of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament. With the loss, the Wildcats must win game two against Western Oregon to keep their season alive.

QUOTING HEAD COACH DESI STOREY
"The guys fought hard. Those were close games obviously Brayde didn't 'get out to the start that we had hoped, but Garza did a great job coming in and we fought back. We gave up a couple late runs and couldn't answer to get back in it."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northwest Nazarene came out hot scoring five runs in the first inning. Shane Jamison pushed across the first run with an RBI single to left. Next up Duke Pahukoah roped another single that extended their lead to two. The barrage of singles continued as Kyle Payne hit one scoring Jamison. Tyler Best capped off the impressive inning with a double to right field that scored two more runs and made it 5-0.
  • The Wildcats got on the board in the sixth when Leid drew a bases-loaded two-out walk. The 'Cats couldn't push across another run and stranded three going into the bottom of the third.
  • Trevor Tripoli started the fifth inning with a double down the left-field line. Next, Charlie Larson executed a great bunt and beat the throw to first. Travis Helm came up to the plate with runners on the corners and hit a sac fly to right field that scored Tripoli.
  • The Nighthawks answered, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the seventh, Best roped a single to right and scored Payne bringing the score to 8-2.
  • The Crimson and Black wouldn't go away quietly and scored three runs in the top of the eighth. Travis Helm led off the inning with a double to right, then Ben Lied stepped up to the dish and delivered an RBI single down the right field line.
  • Next up, Austin Ohland singled to right-field advancing Leid to third. Then, Sam Lauderdale lifted one into center field for another RBI single. Trevor Tripoli grounded out to first and scored Austin Ohland. Ohland's run made it 5-8.
  • Northwest Nazarene played a poised error free ninth inning to take the 8-5 game-one victory.
HITTING PITCHING
  • Brayde Hirai got the start for the 'Cats. Hirai got into a jam and Jonathan Garza II entered the game. Garza II threw four and two thirds and retired six batters via the strikeout. Aaron Robertson relieved Garza II in the sixth. Robertson worked 2.2 innings and recorded two strikeouts.
