Wildcats Clinch GNAC Tournament Berth With 12-7 Victory Over Yellowjackets

BILLINGS, Montana. – Central Washington Baseball clinched a spot in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament with a 12-7 win over Montana State Billings on Thursday. The 'Cats won game two 5-1 and completed the Thursday sweep. With one win tomorrow, The Wildcats will secure the second seed in the GNAC tournament.

"I am proud of the guys they never gave in; it would have been easy to start pressing but we didn't. They did a great job keeping their composure all around. We put five runs up in the tenth and got the win."

Storey added, "In game two, we got clutch hits, guys stepped up, and we got it done."

GAME ONE CWU 12 – MSUB 7
  • Ben Leid put The Wildcats on the board lifting an RBI double into left-center that scored Charlie Larson. In the third inning, Leid and Ohland hit back-to-back doubles that made it 3-0.
  • Jack Nehler pushed across the first run for Montana State Billings hitting an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
  • With runners on first and second in the sixth, Sam Lauderdale came up, executed a great bunt, and beat the throw to load the bases. Next, Austin Ohland scored on a wild pitch and a batter later Trevor Tripoli hit into a fielder's choice that scored Rodriguez.
  • Charlie Larson put the 'Cats up 6-1 with a single up the middle.
  • The Yellowjackets responded in the bottom of the sixth by putting up four runs and Mitch Winter's RBI single in the seventh brought the deficit to one.
  • The Crimson and Black capitalized on control issues from Montana State in the ninth and scored another run when Kyle Rodriguez got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • The Yellowjackets were down two with three outs to go. Kaden Kirshenbaum drew a leadoff walk and then Payton Flynn came up to bat and launched one over the left field fence to tie the game at seven.
  • Aaron Robertson recorded the final out to force extra innings.
  • In the top of the tenth, Hinkle walked, Tripoli reached on a fielder's choice, and then two walks loaded the bases with one out. Travis Helm drew a walk and scored a run, then Ben Leid came up and hit an RBI single through the left side that gave the 'Cats a two-run lead.
  • Next, Austin Ohland stepped into the box and laced the 3-1 pitch to left center. His triple cleared the bases and put CWU up 12-7. Aaron Robertson finished out the bottom of the tenth and Central Washington got the win and a spot in the GNAC tournament.
HITTING
  • Ben Leid led the Cat's offense hitting 3-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and scored two runs.
  • Charlie Larson went 2-4 with an RBI and two walks, Kyle Rodriguez also went 2-4 and scored a run, and Austin Ohland hit 2-5 with a triple, a double, four RBIs, and a run.
PITCHING
  • Daniel Charron got the start for Central Washington. He pitched five innings and struck out two batters. Jonathan Garza II came in and threw 1.2 innings striking out one batter.
  • Nolan Milliman entered in the bottom of the seventh and struck out a batter in 1.2 innings. Aaron Robertson got the win and closed out the game for the 'Cats.

GAME TWO CWU 5 – MSUB 1
  • The Wildcats struck first, scoring two runs in the second inning. Trenton Love hit a double to left center that scored Jake Felton and then Trevor Tripoli hit a double down the left field line that scored Larson.
  • In the fourth, Trenton Love drew a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. A wild pitch allowed Love to take third. Andrew Vankemseke came up and got the RBI on the ground out to second.
  • The Yellowjackets finally put a dent in the three-run deficit when Payton Flynn hit an RBI single to left that scored Anderson.
  • Central Washington scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Helm's RBI double down the right-field line extended the 'Cats lead to four.
  • Alex Brady was in shutdown mode on the mound. He threw 5.1 innings, only allowed one hit, and struck out two batters to earn his fourth win of the season.
HITTING PITCHING
  • Alex Brady got the start and the win throwing 5.1 innings, only allowing one hit, and striking out two batters. Drew Richardson came in and got the save. He recorded one strikeout in 1.2 innings as the 'Cats completed the Thursday sweep.

  • Central Washington will finish out their series against Montana State Billings tomorrow starting at 9 AM.
