SEATTLE – Last Saturday Central Washington prop
Keia Mae Sagapolu received the MA Sorensen Award for being named the top women's rugby player in the country at a special gala in Seattle.
The Sorensen Award, sponsored by the Washington Athletic Club (WAC) is named after MA Sorensen, a World Cup winner for the USA in 1991, a trailblazing collegiate player at William & Mary, and a highly successful and respected coach, ambassador, and anesthesiologist.
Sagapolu became the first ever Wildcat to win the award after she was nominated for the third straight year this year. Fellow Wildcat
Tessa Hann was also nominated this year.
Sagapolu proved once again to be a force on the field for the Wildcats over the course of the season. She converted three tries in the Wildcats 63-12 victory over Penn State on the road.
The Sorensen Award committee weren't the only ones to notice the stellar work Sagapolu did this season as she was elected to the USA Women's Eagles Rugby National Team. Shewent with the Women's Eagles to Spain at the end of March to take on the Spain Women's Lions Rugby Team in a preview match where the Women's Eagles defeated the Women's Lions 20-14 in Madrid. Sagapolu received a start for the Women's Eagles and was the only current college player to do so and was one of eight players to receive their first caps.
Sagapolu most recently traveled to Brazil with Hann for the USA Women's U23 team as they brought home the Americas Rugby Trophy where Sagapolu served as team captain while both Wildcats were selected as starters.
