ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington Wildcat football team (2-2) will stay on the road for one more game as they head to the Land of Enchantment for a matchup against the Western New Mexico Mustangs (1-3) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

The Wildcats won the "Battle of the Pacific Northwest" in a 17-7 victory over Western Oregon (1-3) for their second-straight win. The Wildcat defense picked up where they left off against Angelo State a week prior and secured the victory for the 'Cats on the final WOU drive with an interception to seal the deal.
Kennedy McGill led the passing attack completing 11 of his 15 passes for 88-yards and one touchdown, while
JJ Lemming completed six of his 15 passes for 84 yards.
Tyler Flanagan was an offensive machine for the crimson and black, rushing for 49-yards and one touchdown while also having two receptions for 21-yards and one touchdown.
Zach Matlock led the CWU receiving corps with four receptions for 53-yards.
The Wildcat defense had a field day only allowing the Wolves offense to 206 yards and holding the reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week Dominique Loggins to 10 rushing yards. The defense was led by
Patrick Rogers and
Brett McCalla who each recorded five tackles with Rogers also recording two pass breakups and McCalla having a 0.5 tackle for loss.
Brett Accimus and
Tanner Volk each had four tackles with Accimus recording the lone 'Cat sack in the game while Volk had two interceptions and one pass breakup.
Josh Flowers and
Josiah Cochran each recorded three tackles with Cochran recording one interception and one quarterback hurry.
Mekhi Johnson,
Chase Loidhamer, and
Bridger Feldmann all recorded 0.5 tackle for loss.
Dan Stewart finished the game with seven punts for 252 yards, good for a 36 yard average with one landing within the Wolves 20-yard line.
Josh Jones converted his one field goal attempt for a 40-yard field goal, and also converted both point after touchdown attempts.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
The Mustangs are 1-3 to start the season with their lone victory coming in week one in a 42-28 victory over Sul Ross State. Since then the 'Stangs lost 48-42 to New Mexico Highlands, 30-9 to 21
st-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville, and 62-9 to 22
nd-ranked Angelo State.
"This is a program that's gone through a lot of change, including a staff change with a new head coach, they've got a new scheme, a new defensive coordinator, and I think the kids are getting used to that," CWU Head Football Coach
Chris Fisk said. "We're playing in their homecoming game down there, so there won't be a lack of energy, we'll be anticipating their best."
WNMU has relied on their passing game to create damage as Devin Larsen has already passed for 1,176-yards and 13 touchdowns, completing 94 for 172 passes and his longest pass of 78-yards coming against Sul Ross State. Charles Byers has been the favorite target of Larsen making 25 receptions for 250-yards and three touchdowns. Jeremiah Hartfield has the most receiving yards with 274 and three touchdowns, while Tobi Sonaike has made 18 receptions for 222-yards and one touchdown. The Mustangs have four players who have already accumulated 20 or more tackles on th season, led by Rene Holguin and Jyrei Gamble with 26 and 24, respectively. Corbin Gibson and Holguin have been best at getting in the backfield for five and three tackles for loss. Nicholas Smith and Toalei Lefau lead the 'Stangs with 1.5 tackles for loss. Four different Mustangs have forced a fumble with three Mustangs recovering a fumble. Jyrei Gamble, Jacob Vasquez, and Clayton Zentner all have recorded an interception. The Mustangs defense has batted away 11 passes, led by Vasquez with three pass breakups.
Tanner Bobic has been the leading punter having punted 23 times for 907 yards with six of his punts landing in the opponents 20-yard line. Bobic has converted two of his three field goal attempts with his longest conversion being 39-yards, while also making 10 of 12 point after conversions.
"They're talented, they've got a lot of speed, they throw the ball around the field offensively, which we've seen the past couple of weeks can be our Achilles Heel a little bit," Fisk said. " So, we'll have our work cut out for us. This will probably be our toughest travel of the year, so there's a lot of factors that our guys have to overcome. Their program right now is kind of like what we're trying to do offensively, is get things together and get some cohesion and consistency in there."
