Ellis Nelson, a freshman defensive lineman at Central Washington University and a 2024 graduate of Juanita High School in Kirkland, Wash., had his life unexpectedly turned upside down shortly after arriving at fall football camp in Ellensburg. Diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma, Ellis is now facing a courageous battle against this aggressive cancer. In late August, Ellis returned home after experiencing troubling symptoms and was referred to Fred Hutch Cancer Center at UW Medical Center, where a biopsy confirmed an aggressive form of B-cell lymphoma. Initially, Ellis began a chemotherapy regimen called R-EPOCH, but after further tests, the final diagnosis came back as Burkitt Lymphoma, a rare yet aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Although the diagnosis was overwhelming, Burkitt Lymphoma has a high cure rate, giving Ellis and his family hope.
 
Ellis completed his first round of chemotherapy in late September with minimal side effects and has since transitioned to a more intense treatment plan known as HYPER-CVAD, which involves seven additional cycles scheduled through March. His determination remains unwavering—he's even made it to a Juanita High football game, showing his resilience and love for the sport.
