Warriors Best ‘Cats 6-5, 4-3 in Friday’s Doubleheader

TURLOCK, Calif. – Central Washington baseball fell to Stanislaus State in back-to-back comebacks on Friday night. The Warriors took game one 6-5 and game two 4-3.

Game One: Stanislaus State 6 – Central Washington 5

SCORING
  • Central Washington found their bats in the first inning and put up three runs. Marcus Manzardo opened the game with a single up the middle. "Baba" Varner Jrs. sacrifice fly to center field scored Manzardo.
  • Then, Travis Helm walked and two batters later, Max Bledy roped an RBI double down the left field line. Finally, Andrew Sharp single through the left side gave the 'Cats a 3-0 lead.
  • The Warriors hit home runs in back-to-back innings which cut the deficit to one. In the second inning, Daniel Murphy hit a solo home run deep to left field and the next inning, Kyle Rachels mashed one over the fence in left center.
  • Sharp approached the plate for the Wildcats in the fifth inning, with the bases loaded. He delivered an RBI single up the middle that scored two and put Central Washington ahead 5-2.
  • Flavio Perez was the game one hero for Stanislaus State. Perez rocketed a homer two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth that brought the deficit to one. Then, with the bases loaded in the seventh, he hit one to center field and drove in two runs to give the Warriors the 6-5 lead.
  • Austin Balentine took the mound in the ninth for Stanislaus State. Balentine struck out two and forced a pop up, which locked down the win and earned him his first save of the season.
HITTING
  • Max Bledy hit 3-3, roping two doubles, had an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Andrew Sharp went 3-4 with three RBIs and Marcus Manzardo was 2-5 at the plate.
  • Flavio Perez's performance of 2-4 with a home run and four RBIs led the Stanislaus State. As a team, the Warriors had 12 hits.
PITCHING
  • Alex Brady got the start for the 'Cats. The lefty pitched five innings and struck out three batters. Gabe Bustamante came in and threw one inning. Beau Kearsey came in and worked the final two frames, recording one strikeout.
  • Tony Jacob started and pitched four innings for the Warriors. In his outing, he fanned four batters. Kody Cardoza came on in the fifth inning and picked up the win. He worked three innings and struck out two.
  • Caleb Bertoncini and Austin Balentine pitched the final two innings with Balentine picking up the save.
Game Two: Stanislaus State 4 – Central Washington 3

SCORING
  • Alex Solis got the Warriors on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning. The 'Cats tied it up at one in the third when Manzardo grounded out to second and Ryan McCarthy scored.
  • In the top of the sixth, McCarthy mashed an RBI double down the right field line that drove in Kellen Berg and Ben Leid to give Central Washington the 3-1 advantage.
  • The Warriors used their late game heroics in the bottom of the sixth. Kyle Rachels led the charge by launching his second homer of the day to left center. Next, Junior Tyler Van Dyk roped one to third base that scored Cooper Winton and tied the game at three.
  • Ryan Leonesio stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. Leonesio got hit by the 1-1 pitch and Perez walked down the third base line and touched home to put Stanislaus State up 4-3.
  • The 'Cats fought back in the final inning. Austin Ohland got on with a leadoff single to left field and then Manzardo singled to the shortstop. In the next at bat, Balentine came in to pitch for the Warriors and walked Varner Jr. The 'Cats had the bases loaded with no outs with Helm, Leid, and Bledy up to bat.
  • Balentine found a zone and went into shutdown mode for Stanislaus State. He struck out Helm in five pitches, then tied up Leid in three, and got Bledy to swing at strike three. Balentine's 12 pitched earned him another save and helped the Warriors sweep day one.      
HITTING
  • Manzardo hit 3-4 with an RBI, McCarthy went 2-2 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Austin Ohland was 1-1 as the 'Cats pinch hitter.
  • The Warriors won with five hits. Kyle Rachels was 1-3 and had a home run.
PITCHING
  • Jonathan Garza II started for Central Washington and struck out 10 batters in five innings.
  • Nolan Milliman and Beau Kearsey came in and finished the game for the Wildcats.
  • Will Crookham started on the mound for Stanislaus State. He pitched six innings and recorded five strikeouts.
  • Jojo Keldsen came in and faced two batters before Austin Balentine entered the game and struck out three in a row with runners on base to secure the 4-3 victory.

  • The series rolls on tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
