Stellar Outings From Laver and Kaysner Help 'Cats to Home Opening Split

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University softball team took a split on their home opening day of the 2024 season against the 24th-ranked NAIA program, the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1
 
SCORING:
 
  • The scoring started for the Wildcats in the bottom of the third as Karsyn Decker reached first base continuing to second base after a throwing error from the third baseman which allowed Kate Hopkins to score.
  • The Wildcat's first triple of the season couldn't have come at a better time as Laney Kaysner drilled it to left center bringing home Jillian Hampson, Ashlee Laver, and Hopkins to make it 4-0 CWU in the bottom of the third.
  • Laver earned her first RBI of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning when she doubled to right center bringing home TK Kai and Makenna King to make it 6-0 Wildcats.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Laver pitched the full seven innings, earning the Wildcat's first shutout victory of the season in the process.
  • Laver allowed two hits and three walks while striking out seven against 25 batters.
  • Kaylie Hoskins pitched the full six innings for EOU allowing six hits, six runs two of which were earned, and six walks while striking out 12 against 31 batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished with six hits led by Kaysner with two.
  • Decker, King, Kai, and Laver all contributed one hit apiece.
  • Kaysner earned three RBI while Laver earned two.
  • Hopkins drew three walks while Kai, Laver, and Hampson all drew one apiece.
  • The Mountaineers finished with two hits with two different players earning one apiece.
 
GAME 2
 
SCORING:
 
  • Alyssa Benthagen kept the momentum from the first game going for the Wildcats nailing a single to right field to score Kaysner for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • The Mountaineers struck their first run of the day in the fourth inning when an error by the shortstop helped Grace Spencer secure the stolen home base for EOU tying it at one apiece.
  • Later in the fourth inning Maddy Stateler sacrificed herself to the pitcher allowing Brylin Field to score.
  • In the top of the sixth inning Addison Ribo for the Mountaineers reached first base on a fielder's choice allowing time for Kat Hylton to score making it 3-1 EOU.
  • Later in the sixth, Stateler once again sacrificed herself, this time to the center fielder to score Hannah Tyree to make it 4-1 EOU.
  • The Wildcats wouldn't go down without a fight as Hampson would single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, which scored Brooke Jordan to cut it to 4-2 Mountaineers.
  • Brooke Blocker sacrificed herself to the second baseman bringing home Cady Wilton to make it 4-3 EOU.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Payton Kessler pitched a complete game for the Wildcats allowing seven hits, four runs two of which were earned, and one walk while striking out six against 30 batters.
  • Kylie Parsons also pitched a complete game for the Mountaineers allowing seven hits, three runs, and six walks while striking out nine against 36 batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished with seven hits with Jordan and Benthagen each notching two hits.
  • Kaysner, King, and Hampson all recorded one hit apiece.
  • Benthagen, Hampson, and Blocker all nabbed an RBI.
  • Kaysner, Jordan, King, Hampson, Hopkins, and Zoey Theophilus all drew one walk.
  • The Mountaineers finished with seven hits with Hannah Tyree and Madelyn Durham each leading the way with two apiece.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • The Wildcats hold a slight edge in the series history with 18 victories to EOU's 16.
  • The Wildcats are 9-5 against the Mountaineers on Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field.
  • The loss in game two broke the 'Cats four-game win streak over EOU.

  • The Wildcats and Mountaineers will be at it once again tomorrow for another double-header on Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field.
