Thunderbirds Late Comebacks Best Wildcats in Doubleheader

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Central Washington Baseball lost both games against British Columbia on Saturday. The Thunderbirds utilized the late comeback twice, beating the 'Cats 8-7 in game one and 4-3 in game two. Aaron Marsh, Russell Young and Kyle Anderson delivered at the plate for UBC and Sean Heppner (10 Ks) and Ryan Beitel (5 Ks) excelled on the mound.

"The guys competed well. We need to eliminate some mistakes on the defensive side. On the offensive side, we have to be more consistent and keep the strikeouts down. I was really proud of the way we competed, considering we haven't been outside at all."

GAME ONE: UBC 8 – CWU 7
  • Junior Ben Leid got the 'Cats rolling in the first inning. He roped an RBI double to right field that drove in two runs, giving Central Washington the early lead.
  • The 'Cats didn't keep their lead for long. In the second inning, Russell Young doubled down the right field line to tie the game at two.
  • In the third inning, Austin Ohland laced one to left field and Travis Helm scampered home, which put the 'Cats up 3-2.
  • Kaden Zarowny got a hold of one in the fourth for his first home run of the season. Zarowny's homer gave the Thunderbirds the 4-3 lead. The next inning, Aaron Marsh's single drove in another run for UBC.
  • Central Washington rallied in the 8th inning. It started with Jake Felton doubling to right field, which scored two and tied the game at five. Next, Jake Madson singled to left, scoring two runs and giving CW the 7-5 lead.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Russell Young put the ball in play and a wildcat error allowed Jad Lamothe to score and put runners at second and third. Next up was Aaron Marsh. Marsh stepped to the plate and hit a single to right field that drove in Zarowny and gave the Thunderbirds the 8-7 lead.
  • British Columbia held Central Washington scoreless in the ninth to secure the 8-7 victory.
HITTING
  • Jake Felton went 3-4 at the dish with two doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored.
  • Austin Ohland and Ben Leid both went 2-5 with a double. Leid drove in two runs while Ohland had one RBI.
  • Jake Madson had a good first game as a Wildcat. He had a single, two RBIs, and a stolen base.
  • Marcus Manzardo wasted no time registering his first hit as a Wildcat today. He led off game one with a singled up the middle.
  • Six thunderbirds registered hits with three, McGill, Young, and Marsh all recording two hits.
PITCHING
  • Alex Brady got the start for Central Washington. Brady went three innings and fanned three batters.
  • Logan Pierce made his Wildcat debut in the bottom of the fourth. Pierce threw three innings.
  • Beau Kearsey and Nolan Milliman threw the final two innings for the 'Cats.
  • Sean Heppner threw five innings and recorded 10 strikeouts for UBC. James Brock got the win and Evan Hoegler recorded the save.
 
GAME TWO: UBC 4 – CWU 3
  • The first three innings were a stalemate. In the fourth, both teams pushed across a run.
  • Marcus Manzardo's sacrifice bunt in the fifth scored Ryan McCarthy and gave the 'Cats the 2-1 lead. Ohland's single to left in the sixth extended Central Washington's lead to two.
  • David Draayers cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single that got the Thunderbirds within one.
  • The eighth inning was once again UBC's. Kyle Anderson's single to second base scored Jack Boomer and tied the game at three. Later in the inning, Mitchell Middlemiss stole second and the 'Cats throw down was errant, and Jaden Lamothe scored from third which gave the Thunderbirds a one run lead.
  • In the ninth, Carter Marlow drew an opening walk, but two strikeouts followed by a pop up ended the Wildcats' chances to tie the game.
  • British Columbia left Bellingham with two wins.
HITTING
  • Austin Ohland went 3-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Ben Leid had two hits, one triple, and scored a run.
  • Max Bledy and Ryan McCarthy got their first hits at Central Washington. Bledy's RBI double up the middle scored Ohland and McCarthy's single in the fifth led to him scoring.
  • In the victory, British Columbia had seven hits, two doubles, and three RBIs.
PITCHING
  • Jonathan Garza II got the start in game two. Garza II threw five innings and recorded three strikeouts. Aaron Robertson pitched two innings before Drew Richardson took the mound for the final inning. Robertson and Richardson each recorded a strikeout.
  • Ryan Beitel started on the mound for the Thunderbirds. He pitched four innings and struck out five.
  • As a reliever, Daniel Orfaly went three innings and fanned three batters.
  • Vicarte Domingo got his first win of the season. He threw two innings and tied up two batters.
ON DECK
  • Central Washington travels to the Golden State next week for four games against Cal State San Bernardino, starting with a lone game at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
