Strong Pitching not Enough for Wildcats on Day 2 of DII First Pitch Invitational

CONROE, Texas – The Central Washington University softball team fell in both games on day two of the DII First Pitch Invitational.

VS. MIDWESTERN STATE
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Mustangs were the first to strike when Allie Monroe singled to center field scoring Chloe Bryant in the third inning. 
  • Later in the third inning MSU added onto their lead when Maegan Shannon sacrificed herself to score Camile Nunez for the 2-0 lead. 
  • The Wildcats would respond in the bottom of the third when Karsyn Decker singled to left field bringing Kate Hopkins home to cut the 'Stang lead to 2-1. 
  • MSU added another run in the top of the fourth when Bryant singled up the middle to score Paige Gallegos making it 3-1 MSU. 
  • Monroe tacked on another score in the top of the seventh drilling a homerun to center field to make it 4-1 Midwestern State. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Olivia Ross made her Wildcat debut pitching all seven innings for CWU allowing nine hits, four runs, three of which were earned, while getting three strikeouts against 31 batters. 
  • Elizabeth Uhl earned the victory for MSU pitching four innings and allowing four hits, one run and two walks while striking out one against 17 batters. 
  • Sydney Gonzales earned the save pitching the final three innings and allowing one hit while getting one strikeout against 10 batters. 
 
HITTING:
   
VS. ST. MARY'S
 
SCORING:
 
  • Raegan Tennill put the Rattlers on the board in the top of the third when she singled up the middle to score Mackenzie Dugi making it 1-0 SMU. 
  • The Wildcats took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Hopkins singled up the middle bringing home Zoey Theophilus and Makenna King to make it 2-1 CWU. 
  • The Rattlers would come right back and tie the game up in the top of the fifth when Destiny Salinas tripled to right center which brought Reba Reyes home to tie the game at two apiece. 
  • SMU would take the lead later in the fifth inning when Tennill tripled to left center scoring Salinas to put SMU up 3-2. 
 
PITCHING: 
 
  • Ashlee Laver pitched a complete game going all seven innings and allowing 10 hits and three runs while getting four strikeouts against 27 batters. 
  • Breanna Ford started for the Rattlers lasting four innings and allowing four hits, two runs, and three walks while getting two strikeouts against 19 batters. 
  • Jadyn Abrego pitched one inning allowing three hits against six batters. 
  • Savannah Youngblood wrapped things up for SMU pitching the final two innings and allowing one hit against eight batters. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished the game with eight hits led by Benthagen and Hopkins with two. 
  • Laney Kaysner, Decker, King, and Theophilus all recorded a hit. 
  • The Rattlers finished the game with 10 hits with three different players recording two hits apiece. 
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • This was the first meeting between the Wildcats and the Mustangs. 
  • The Wildcats and Rattlers have met three times now with SMU holding the 2-1 victory. 
  • The Wildcats won the previous matchup on February 7, 2020 in St. George, Utah 11-5.
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will wrap up their participation in the DII First Pitch Invitational tomorrow morning with a matchup against the Washburn Ichabods (2-2) at 8:00 a.m. on field one of Scrap Yard Sports in Conroe, Texas.
