Wildcats Dominate Day One and Pick up Two Wins Over Saint Martin’s

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Central Washington Baseball opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with two great wins, 14-6 and 9-8, over Saint Martin's on Saturday.

"The guys played well; it was nice to start conference play with a win. Baba and Manzardo had great games, and guys at the bottom of the order stepped up. Overall, it was a great team effort."

Game One: Central Washington 14 – Saint Martin's 6

SCORING
  • Saint Martin's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The 'Cats responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Max Bledy singled to left, which drove in two runs and tied the game. Leid followed that up with a single to right that plated two more runs to take a 4-2 advantage going into the second inning.
  • Ohland stepped into the batter's box in the fourth inning and hit a moonshot off the scoreboard. Ohland's three run shot put Central Washington ahead 7-5.
  • The Wildcats tacked on three runs in the eighth and picked up the big 14-6 victory.
HITTING
  • Austin Ohland hit a home run, a double, went 2-5 with three RBIs, and scored two runs. Manzardo hit 3-5 and had one RBI.
  • Ben Leid had three hits in as many at bats and drove in four runs.
  • Austin Schaler had the best game at the plate for Saint Martin's going 2-4 with three RBIs and a home run.
PITCHING
  • Alex Brady started for CWU. Brady threw 5.2 innings, faced 25 batters, and struck out five Saints.
  • Gabe Bustamante came in and threw the final 3.1 innings, fanned one batter, and earned his first save of the season.
  • Cole Hatton started on the mound for the Saints. Hatton pitched 5.1 innings, had one punch out, and allowed eight runs in the loss. Sam McCauley and Isaiah Mayfield threw the final two frames for Saint Martin's.
Game Two: Saint Martin's 8 – Central Washington 9

SCORING
  • The Saints scored two runs in the first inning. Schaler hit a two-run home run over the right field fence to put Saint Martin's up 4-0.
  • The Wildcats mounted a comeback in the third inning. Andrew Sharp mashed a three-run homer to right center. Next, back-to-back RBI singles from Hinkle and Leid tied the game at five.
  • Saint Martin's tacked on three more runs to take the 8-5 advantage going into the sixth inning.
  • Central Washington didn't give up and rallied in the sixth inning. First, Varner Jr. hit a single to right center that scored Jake Felton. Next, Leid crushed a double that drove in two runs and tied the game. Finally, Brady Hinkle ripped an RBI single to left field that put the 'Cats ahead 9-8. In the final inning, Drew Richardson took the mound and got the final three outs to secure Central Washington's second victory of the day.
HITTING
  • "Baba" Varner Jr. went a perfect 4-4 at the plate and had a double and an RBI. Ben Leid was 3-4 with a double and three RBIs and Brady Hinkle hit 2-3 and drove in two runs.
  • Andrew Sharp hit a three-run home run.
  • Schaler led the Saints offense again. He was 3-5 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBIs.
PITCHING
  • Jonathan Garza II got the start in game two and worked 2.2 innings, faced 14 batters and allowed five runs, four earned. Beau Kearsey and Nolan Milliman each came in and threw 1.2 innings. Milliman tied up three batters, didn't allow a run, and got the win.
  • Drew Richardson recorded the final three outs for Central Washington and picked up his third save of the year.
  • Justice Yamashita started for Saint Martin's. He pitched five innings, struck out five batters, and allowed seven runs (5 earned). Caleb Okada threw the last inning and had two K's.

  • Central Washington wraps up their four-game home series tomorrow at noon against Saint Martin's.
