Wildcats Hot Hitting Continues: Splitting Series With Yellowjackets

BILLINGS- Mont.- Despite some early morning snow moving game times around, the Central Washington University baseball (13-13) team split day 2 against Montana State University Billings (10-20) at Pirtz Park. The Wildcats would strike hot and early in game 1 winning 21-3 and would fall 3-1 in game two. Game 1 would be highlighted by 21 runs coming off of 22 hits and a strong performance on the mound by Pierce.

"Played a really great game one, Logan pitched well and the guys hit well resulting in a good team win. Came out ready for game 2 and hit really well, just left to many guys on base. Charron pitched a good game and we had strong defense, but missed some opportunities. Looking forward to getting back home for our series with NNU next week."
 
Game 1:CWU-21 MSUB-3
The 'Cats put up a football score in game one with Austin Ohland adding another home run to his impressive season. Logan Pierce would get the nod in game one throwing 7.2 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) off of 8 hits while striking out 2. 
Scoring:
  • CWU would get on the board in the 2nd inning adding 4 runs off of 2 hits, highlighted by Marcus Manzardo and Ohland's RBI singles. 4-0
  • The Yellowjackets would add their first run in the bottom of the 2nd off a sac fly to left. 4-1. 
  • The Wildcats would add five runs in the fourth innings with 3 RBI singles by Ohland, Leid, and Sharpe. McCarthy would add another on a RBI to second. 8-1.
  • The 'Cats would add seven in the fifth with Kevin "Baba" Varner Jr. getting it started on an RBI double down the right field line, Ben Leid, Trenton Love, and Marcus Manzardo would all add RBI singles, Andrew Sharp and Jake Madson would reach on errors resulting in runs coming across. CWU leads 16-1. 
  • MSUB would add a couple of runs in the bottom of the fifth off of a pair of RBI singles. 16-3.
  • Ohland would score in the top of the sixth off a sac fly by Jake Felton to extend the lead 17-3. 
  • The Wildcats would add four more runs in the eighth inning, Felton would get HBP with the bases loaded to bring across the first run of the inning, Travis Helm would get an RBI on a fielder's choice, and Carter Marlowe would rope a single through the left side to score Leid. 20-3.
  • Austin Ohland would cap off game one with a big fly to left to make it 21-3. 
 
Hitting:
  • The Wildcats would finish with 22 hits in the game resulting in 21 runs. Baba, Ohland, and Leid all had a double, as well as at least 3 hits each. Ohland finished 6-6 with a HR and 4 RBI's, Andrew Sharp finished 4-7 with 2 RBI's, Ben Leid was 3-6 with 2 RBI's, Kevin "Baba" Varner Jr. went 3-7 with 3 RBI's. 
  • MSUB would finish with 3 runs on 8 hits. Zack Blasak would finish 2-3 for the Yellowjackets with 1 double and an RBI. 
  • Jake Madson would go 2-4 at the plate while scoring 3 runs, and Trenton Love would finish 1-2 pinch hitting for the 'Cats.
 
Pitching:
  • Logan Pierce would pick up the win moving his record to 2-0 on the season. Pierce would throw 7.2 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 runs.
  • Reid Rasmussen would pitch 1.1 innings in relief, striking out 1 and allowing 0 hits. 
  • Ryun Cross would get the loss for the Yellowjackets throwing 3.0 innings allowing 9 runs (4 earned). Evans and Schaaf would pitch in relief for MSUB. 
 
Game 2: CWU-1  MSUB-3  
Daniel Charron got the nod in game two looking to close out the series for the 'Cats. Charron would pitch 6.0 innings allowing 3 runs off 8 hits while striking out 4. Baba would finish 2-3 with a double. 
 
Scoring:
  • MSUB would get their runs in the 4th inning. A single through the right side would score two for the Yellowjackets and a single up the middle would bring the third runner across. 0-3.
  • Jake Madson would score off of an RBI single by Marcus Manzardo. 1-3.
 
Hitting:
  • Manzardo finished 1-3 with an RBI and a walk. Baba finished 2-3 with a double and a walk. Leid would finish 1-2 at the plate.
  • The Yellowjackets would finish with 3 runs off of 8 hits. Payton Flynn would finish 2-3. 
  • Max Bledy would finish 1-1 pinch hitting for the Wildcats.
Pitching:
  • Charron would pitch 6.0 innings allowing 3 runs of 8 hits while striking out 4 and not giving up any walks. 
  • MSUB's Cy Miller would pitch a complete game 7.0 innings allowing 1 run off 7 hits while striking out 5. 
 
ON DECK
The Wildcats will come home for a four game series against #14 Northwest Nazarene University on Friday March 29th, and Saturday March 30th. Both double headers are slated to start at 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
