Baseball Faces Setbacks Against Yellowjackets on Senior Day

ELLENSBURG, Wash.- The Central Washington University baseball team [20-24 (14-14)] would fall 9-14 in game one, and 6-7 in game two to the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets [16-30 (10-18)] on Saturday. Ben Leid would hit two home runs in game one for the Wildcats. CWU would honor seniors Divine Ayemere, Nick Lindholm, Drew Richardson, Nolan Milliman, Alex Brady, Beau Kearsey, and Austin Ohland as they played their final home game at the Wildcat Baseball Field.

"I'm thankful and grateful for all that our seniors have done to help contribute to our team throughout their careers, and I'm glad we could honor them today. Games didn't go the way we wanted today, need to execute and come out with more consistency next week against NNU." 
 
G1: CWU- 9  MSUB- 14
Ben Leid would mash two home runs to right field in game one as the Wildcats ultimately fell 9-14. Logan Pierce would start the game on the mound for CWU and be tagged with the loss. Leid finished 4-5 in game one with 2 HR and 5 RBI's. 
Scoring:
  • The Yellowjackets would hit a home run and a double in the first to push across 3 runs to lead 0-3. 
  • MSUB would add three more in the third on a 3-run home run to lead 0-6. 
  • Ben Leid would mash his first home run of the game with one to right field in the bottom of the third inning to trail 1-6. 
  • The Yellowjackets would add 2 more in the 5th to grow their lead 1-8.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning Jake Felton would double to left field to score Leid 2-8.
  • MSUB would add one in the 6th to lead 2-9.
  • The Wildcats added 3 runs in the 6th inning as Leid would his second home run of the game to right center to close in 5-9.
  • Andrew Sharp would absolutely crush a ball onto the softball field in the 8th inning as the Wildcats would trail by 2, 7-9.
  • MSUB would score 4 in the top of the 9th high lifted by a Barnes home run. 7-14.
  • Ben Leid would hit a 2 RBI single to right field scoring Manzardo and Madson. 9-14.
Hitting:
  • The Wildcats would finish with 9 runs off 14 hits in the game seeing Ben Leid go 4-5 with 2 HR's and 5 RBI's. Andrew Sharp would finish 2-5 with a home run and 2 RBI's. Jake Felton would finish 2-5 at the plate with a double and RBI. 
  • MSUB had 14 runs off 23 hits in the game seeing 3 Yellowjackets hit home runs, and everyone in their lineup get at least 1 hit. 
 
Pitching:
  • Logan Pierce would move to 2-2 on the season as he would throw 6.0 IP for the Wildcats. Beau Kearsey, Drew Richardson, and Gabe Bustamante would all make appearances in relief for CWU. 
  • Cy Miller would get the start for MSUB and pick up his second win of the season moving his record to 2-5. Miller threw 6.0 IP and was relieved by McClellan and Schaaf. 
 
G2: CWU- 6 MSUB- 7
A 4 run top of the seventh inning would lift MSUB over the Wildcats in game two. Daniel Charron would get the nod off the mound in game two pitching 5.0 innings. Kevin "Baba" Varner Jr. would finish the game going 3-5 at the plate with an RBI. Marcus Manzardo would finish 2-5 at the plate with 2 RBI's. 
Scoring:
  • The Wildcats came out hot in the final game of the series when Leid would score Manzardo on a double down the RF line to lead 1-0. 
  • MSUB would tie it up in the top of the second inning on a single, 1-1.
  • Trenton Love would retake the lead for the Wildcats when he scored Felton on a single to center field. 2-1
  • The 'Cats would add two more in the bottom of the fourth inning 4-1.
  • The GNAC home run leader Payton Flynn would add another home run in the 6th for MSUB to make it 4-3. 
  • The Yellowjackets would get 4 runs in the 7th inning to lead 4-7.
  • Manzardo would single to center field scoring Max Bledy and Travis Helm, but ultimately fell short 6-7. 
Hitting:
  • The Wildcats finished game four with 6 runs off of 10 hits seeing Baba finish 3-5,  Manzardo finish 2-5, and seeing Ohland and Leid both have a double and RBI. 
  • MSUB would have 7 runs off 9 hits in the contest seeing Flynn finish 2-4 with a HR.  
Pitching:
  • Daniel Charron would start the final game of the series for the Wildcats throwing 5.0 IP allowing 1 earned run (3 total) off of 4 hits while striking out 2 batters. Aaron Robertson would come in relief and throw 1.2 IP, being tagged with the loss, A-Rob would allow 2 runs off 2 hits while striking out 2 batters. Jonathan Garza II would make an appearance out of the 'pen in top of the seventh recording 0.1 IP. 
  • Andy Evans would get the start for MSUB tossing 3.2 IP allowing 4 runs off 6 hits. Brian Baker would pick up the win out of the 'pen tossing 2.2 IP. Sage Wayment would come in and record the final two outs of the game. 
 
ON DECK
The Wildcats have a chance to clinch a spot in the GNAC tournament next week with their final regular season series as they hit the road to Nampa Idaho to clash with the #23 Northwest Nazarene Univeristy Nighthawks. The series is set to start on Thursday May 2nd with first pitches scheduled for 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, and wrap up on Friday May 3rd with games at 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
