Wildcats Take Game Four: Drop Series to NNU

NAMPA, Idaho.- The Central Washington University baseball team [21-27 (15-17)] would fall 1-8 in game three of the series, and win game four 9-7 against #24 Northwest Nazarene University [33-12-1 (23-9)] on Friday. The Wildcats are headed to the 2024 GNAC Championship Tournament on May 9th and 10th in Billings Montana. NNU will be the #1 seed, WOU will be the #2 seed, and CWU rounds it out as the #3 seed. Austin Ohland became the all-time leader in doubles hit (62) in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with his double yesterday.

G3: CWU- 1  NNU- 8
The Wildcats would drop the third game of the series to the Nighthawks, with a final score of 1-8. Logan Pierce would get the nod to toe the rubber in game one, being tagged with the loss tossing 4.0 IP. The Wildcats would have four batters finish 2-4 at the plate, with Andrew Sharp and Jake Felton recording doubles.  
Scoring:
  • The Nighthawks would get two runs in the first, highlighted by a Tishenkel RBI double. 0-2.
  • NNU would add another in the second inning on an RBI single to left, 0-3. 
  • The Nighthawks would add three in the third highlighted by a Paganelli 2-run home run to left, 0-6.
  • Paganelli would hit another 2-run home run for NNU in the fourth to extend the lead 0-8.
  • Ryan McCarthy would hit a sac fly for CWU in the 7th to score Sharp, 1-8. 
Hitting:
  • The Wildcats would end game one with 1 run on 10 hits, seeing Kevin "Baba" Varner Jr., Ben Leid, Jake Felton, and Brayde Hinkle would all finish with 2 hits in the contest.
  • The Nighthawks would finish with 8 runs on 16 hits, highlighted by Paganelli who hit two 2-run home runs.  
Pitching:
  • Logan Pierce would get the start and he tagged with the loss logging 4.0 IP, allowing 8 runs on 12 hits and striking out two batters. Beau Kearsey would pitch 4.0 innings in relief allowing 0 runs, 4 hits, and striking out two batters. 
  • Blake Hammond would get the start and win going 6.0 IP allowing 1 run on 7 hits. Brooks, Brown, and Bishopp would all make appearances in relief. 
 
G4: CWU- 9 NNU- 7
The Wildcats would avoid the series sweep winning game four by a score of 9-7. Daniel Charron would get the nod to toe the rubber and pick up the win tossing 5.0 IP allowing 5 runs off 9 hits. Marcus Manzardo would finish 3-5 at the plate while scoring 2 runs for the 'Cats. 
Scoring:
  • Sharp would double to right center to score Manzardo in the first to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead. 
  • NNU would tie it in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch, 1-1. 
  • The Wildcats would add two in the second inning off a pair of RBI singles by Hinkle and Manzardo to lead 3-1. 
  • The Nighthawks scored one in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to left to trail 3-2.
  • Travis Helm would hit a 2 RBI double to left center to score Sharp and Leid in the third to extend their lead 5-2. 
  • NNU would add one on an RBI single in the bottom of the third, trailing 5-3.
  • Austin Ohland would hit a sac fly in the fourth inning to score Jake Madson, 'Cats lead 6-3.
  • The Wildcats would add three runs in the sixth inning seeing Manzardo score on a fielder's choice, Felton would single to left scoring Ohland and Sharp as the Wildcats would lead 9-3. 
  • Wayne would hit a 2-run homer in the sixth for NNU and hit an RBI single in the seventh, Herrera would also hit an RBI single in the seventh to close out the scoring at 9-7. 
Hitting:
  • The Wildcats would get 9 runs on 15 hits, seeing Manzardo finish 3-5 with an RBI, Baba would finish 2-5 with a double, Sharp would finish 2-4 with a double, Leid would finish 2-4 with a double, Felton would have 2 RBI's, Helm would rope a double and have 2 RBI's, and Jake Madson would finish 2-4.
  • The Nighthawks would finish with 7 runs off 15 hits, highlighted by Wayne hitting a home run and finishing 2-2 with 3 RBI's. 
Pitching:
  • Daniel Charron would get the start and win, moving his record to 5-4 on the season. He would log 5.0 IP allowing 5 runs off 9 hits while striking out 3. Aaron Robertson would log 2.0 IP in relief allowing 2 runs off 6 hits. 
  • Zayas would get the start and be tagged with the loss, throwing 3.1 IP allowing 6 runs off 9 hits while striking out four batters. Duncan and Calnon would make appearances in relief, Duncan allowing 3 runs off 4 hits and Calnon surrendering 2 hits. 
 
ON DECK
The Wildcats will head to Billings Montana as the #3 seed in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, taking place on May 9th and 10th!
