LANGLEY, B.C. – The Central Washington University men's basketball team (2-0) continued its high note to start the season with a second straight win as the Wildcats defeated the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma (1-1) Saturday evening on the second day of the CCA DII Canadian Tip-Off Classic.
Notable Stats
- Jordan Clark led the team in scoring with 21 points, followed by Bradley Swillie with 13.
- Garrett Marrs showed up under the hoop–recording seven rebounds including three offensive boards. Jalen Childs and Calvin Sisk each recorded five rebounds as well.
- Sisk and Eli Williams each had a block in the game, while six different Wildcats each recorded a steal.
- Central now leads the series history 2-1.
First Half
- Both teams opened the game competitively leading to a 7-7 tie after about seven minutes.
- After almost two minutes of no scoring, Williams hit a three-pointer to break the tie and give Central a 10-7 lead.
- The Bronchos fought to keep the game close, but the Wildcats found opportunities to keep the lead out of reach.
- Then, with 8:16 left, Jacobi Sebock hit a jump shot to cut the lead to one and after a minute and a half, Swillie answered with a jumper of his own to build the lead back to three.
- Then while trailing by two points, Central Oklahoma struck with a three-point shot from Josh Nwankwo to take a 24-23 lead.
- The teams traded the lead for the next couple of minutes before falling into a tie to close the first half at 29-29.
Second Half
- The Bronchos opened the second half with a layup from Ben Averitt, but the 'Cats responded with a layup from Swillie to tie it back up.
- Central Oklahoma got a another layup to fall, but the Wildcats got a three-pointer from Demetrus Johnson II to take a one-point lead.
- Both teams traded the lead for a moment before Central got an edge off of a pair of free throws from Sisk.
- However, less than a minute later, UCO found the tie off a three-pointer from Parker Hannah at 38-38.
- Clark found a big edge after getting a layup to fall and drawing a foul for the and-one. He would sink the following free throw to give CWU a three-point lead.
- Nwankwo got a layup to cut the lead to one, but the Crimson and Black responded with a three-pointer from Williams and a jumper from Childs to make it a six-point game.
- Chae Haynes got a jump shot to fall before the Bronchos found a stride and scored six points to cut the lead to two with 9:57 left.
- Then, the 'Cats answered with a layup from Johnson II and a three-pointer from Clark to rebuild the lead to seven.
- Strong plays from both teams kept the score rising as Central held a steady lead.
- Central Oklahoma battled hard and continued to try and cut the lead down, but the Wildcats carried the competitive momentum and responded to scoring runs to keep the lead out of reach as time ticked down and the Crimson and Black took the 75-65 victory.
