'Cats Dominate Lobos

ALPINE, Texas – The 7th-ranked Central Washington University Football Team (9-1, 8-0 LSC) put together a dominant performance to earn at least a share of the Lone Star Conference title with a 73-7 victory over the Sul Ross State Lobos (0-10, 0-8 LSC) Saturday evening.

QUOTING CWU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH CHRIS FISK:

"We're very proud of the way the guys played and traveled this week. We're excited to get home and get to work for Western Oregon."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The 'Cats wasted no time at the start of the game after recovering an onside kick as Justice Taylor rambled in a 44-yard touchdown and with David Weber's successful PAT, made it 7-0 CWU with 13:40 left in the first.
  • Key tackles by Brett McCalla, Tyler King, and Mikaio Edward helped the 'Cats force a quick punt to give the ball back to the offense.
  • Both defenses stepped up forcing back-to-back punts as the 'Cats took back over.
  • A big Kennedy McGill completion to Logan Brady for 20 yards paired with a 10-yard connection to Jalen Grable set the 'Cats up in the Sul Ross redzone and four plays later saw McGill run it in for a nine-yard touchdown and with Weber's PAT, ended the first quarter with the 'Cats on top 14-0.
  • The Wildcat defense opened the second quarter with a big three and out thanks to tackles by Wahi Emmsley and Edward.
  • McGill connected with Samaje Featherstone for a big 34 yard shot to put the 'Cats deep in Lobo territory. Justice Taylor took it from there only needing three plays to get the ball into the endzone, capping it off with a 10-yard run into the endzone. David Weber's PAT made it 21-0 CWU with 11:59 left in the second.
  • A key interception by Mika Roberson stalled the Sul Ross State drive after making their way into CWU territory and the 'Cats did not let it go to waste, marching down the field thanks to big rushes by Bumgarner and Taylor paired with a short connection from McGill to Grable helped set up McGill for a 15-yard touchdown run. Weber's PAT made it a 28-0 score with 4:35 left in the second.
  • The next Lobo drive started with a sack by Tyler King for a loss of six yards followed immediately by an interception by King Williams to set the 'Cats up at the SRSU 30-yard line.
  • McGill immediately connected with Brady for a quick 10-yards, followed by Taylor adding 16 more on the ground which helped McGill connect with Taylor for a four-yard touchdown. Another PAT by Weber made it 35-0 in favor of CWU with 1:55 left in the second.
  • The Lobos responded as Kye Callicoatte connected with Jose Trevino for 11 yards, then found Yamil Oaxaca for a 64-yard bomb and with Vicente Gariveay connecting on the PAT, made it 35-7 in favor of CWU with 1:20 left in the second.
  • A three-and-out by the Lobo defense saw them take back over with 39 seconds left as they kept their momentum going, driving deep into CWU territory, but time expired as the teams headed to the half break with the 'Cats up 35-7.
  • McGill found Grable for a big 23-yard gain to get the 'Cats on the SRSU side of the field and 13 yards on the ground by Taylor and four more by Bumgarner helped set Weber up with a successful 29-yard field goal attempt to increase the Wildcat lead to 38-7.
  • Another three-and-out by the 'Cats defense saw the 'Cats take over at the SRSU 36-yard line.
  • McGill immediately connected with Featherstone for a big 14-yard gain and then took it himself for another 21 yards which set up Bumgarner for a one-yard touchdown and with Weber's PAT, upped the lead to 45-7 with 7:22 left in the third.
  • Another three-and-out by the CWU defense was capped by a 10-yard sack by Logan Lisherness as the crimson and black took back over at the SRSU 41-yard line.
  • A quick pass from Caleb Christensen to Taylor for two yards was followed by back-to-back rushes by Taylor for seven more. Christensen then connected with Featherstone for a 32-yard touchdown and Weber's PAT would be good to make it 52-7 with 3:42 left in the third.
  • One more three-and-out by the Wildcat defense thanks to a breakup by David Jones gave the ball back to CWU at the Sul Ross 48-yard line.
  • Ki'Marree Washington took over, maneuvering 32-yards to set the 'Cats up in the Lobo redzone to end the third quarter with CWU up 52-7.
  • Two plays was all that was needed as Christensen found AJ Perez for his first collegiate touchdown in the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown and with Weber's PAT increased the lead to 59-7 with 14:51 left in the game.
  • The Lobos were moving down the field on their next possession only for Callicoatte to fumble the ball and for Connor Goff to pick it up and return it to the SRSU 20-yard line.
  • Washington immediately found 17-yards on the ground and then three plays later powered his way into the endzone. Weber successfully kicked the PAT and made it 66-7 CWU with 11:01 left in the game.
  • Another three-and-out by the crimson and black gave the ball back to the 'Cats.
  • Antoine Lee started the next drive with a pair of big gains on the ground followed Bo Gionet adding three of his own before Lee took it from there with a 27-yard touchdown rush for his first collegiate touchdown. Weber added the PAT and made it 73-7 with 6:21 left in the game.
  • The Lobos moved their way downfield, but a big fourth and one tackle for loss by Treyson Eddleman gave the ball back to CWU with 1:13 left in the game.
  • A pair of kneel downs sealed the deal as the 'Cats won 73-7 to clinch at least a share of the Lone Star Conference title.
