Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wildcats Comeback Falls Just Short at #19 Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – The 17th-ranked Central Washington University Women's Basketball Team suffered their first setback of the season in a tight 70-67 game at the 19th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

  • Final: Central Washington (67), Cal Poly Pomona (70)
  • Records: CWU (7-1, 1-0 GNAC), CPP (7-1, 2-0 CCAA)
  • Location: Kellogg Arena (Pomona, Calif.)

QUOTING CWU HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH:

"We had too many turnovers and fouls in the first half against a great team who capitalized on our mistakes. The early deficit was just too much to overcome in the second half. Give CPP credit, they hit some very timely shots and made big plays to keep the game out of reach. I was pleased with our fight but we can learn a lot from this one and need to."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Cal Poly Pomona struck first at the 7:51 mark with a three, but Capri Sims responded with a jumper of her own to make it 3-2 CPP.
  • It was a rinse and repeat a minute and a half later, but a three at the 4:33 mark gave CWU their first lead, 7-6 to head into the media timeout.
  • The Broncos came out of the media rattling off 11-straight points to end the first with CPP on top 17-7.
  • The Broncos used a 17-6 run to begin the second quarter to take the 34-13 lead with 1:58 left in the second.
  • Layups by Fiona Snashall and Sims paired with a three from Asher Cai made it a 34-20 game, but a three by Jeanette Fine of the Broncos sent the teams to the half break with Cal Poly Pomona leading 37-20.
  • A 6-0 run by the Broncos to begin the third quarter made it a 43-20 CPP lead.
  • A free-throw by Sims sparked an 8-0 run by the 'Cats to cut it to a 43-28 game with 5:45 left in the second.
  • The teams continued to battle back-and-forth with each other as the Broncos took the 56-39 lead to head into the final 10 minutes.
  • An and-one by the Broncos to begin the fourth quarter was answered by a 10-0 run by the 'Cats including back-to-back trey's by Snashall to cut it to 59-49 with 7:42 left.
  • The Broncos responded with a 7-2 run to make it 66-51 with 5:18 left.
  • Back-to-back layups by Sims and Cai with Cai's being an and-one, followed by back-to-back threes from Cai and Snashall saw the Bronco lead cut to 66-62 with 1:51 remaining.
