Wildcats Falter on Day One of the TOC

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Central Washington University Softball Team suffered a pair of setbacks after multiple time changes in the opening day of the annual Tournament of Champions down in California on Friday.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Mia Flores put the 'Cats on the board in the top of the first inning when she flied out to right field to score Jessica Reitz-Eaton and make it 1-0 CWU. 
  • The Warriors responded in the bottom of the first when Sarah Giles homered to right field to also score Madisyn Leffle. 
  • Karsyn Decker tied things up in the third inning when she scored on a wild pitch. 
  • Kylie Nunes gave the Warriors the lead once again in the fourth inning when she singled to the center field to score Maddy Ybarra and make it 3-2 Jessup. 
  • The Warriors had a big fifth inning when Leffle singled up the middle to score Hannah Dominguez, immediately followed by Aaliyah Pineda doubling to right field to score Giles, Leffle, and Neva Adams and put Jessup up 7-2. 
  • The Wildcats rallied in the sixth inning as Reitz-Eaton singled to center field to score Brooke Blocker followed by Flores reaching on an error by the second baseman which scored both Reitz-Eaton and Adriana Rodriguez making it a 7-5 score in favor of Jessup. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • Reitz-Eaton, Decker, and Halle Dilger all recorded two hits apiece. 
  • McKayla Cable, Flores, Blocker, and Rodriguez all had one hit. 
  • Reitz-Eaton and Flores each had one RBI. 
  • Reitz-Eaton and Cable both drew one walk. 
  • Leffle led Jessup with two hits. 
  • Pineda had three RBI to lead the Warriors. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Payton Kessler pitched four innings allowing five hits, six runs, one walk, and struck out four against 19 batters. 
  • Olivia Ross pitched two innings allowing one hit, one run, and struck out three of eight batters faced. 
  • Bella MacFarlane pitched the first four innings for Jessup allowing five hits, two runs, and two walks while striking out two of 20 batters faced. 
  • Jazlyn Villavicencio pitched the final three innings allowing five hits, three runs one of which earned, and earned three strikeouts against 15 batters. 
 
GAME 2
 
SCORING:
 
  • Nevaeh Martinez notched the first score of the game in the third inning when she doubled down the left field line to score Ellie Escalante. 
  • Later in the third inning Martinez scored on an error by the catcher making it 2-0 Otters. 
  • Reese Schimmel smashed the 'Cats first home run of the season in the third inning and made it a 2-1 score in the process. 
  • Monterey Bay responded in a huge way in the fourth inning as Martinez doubled to center field to score Escalante and Gracie Strycula followed by Abreanna Alba singling to third base and scored Kiley Ganaden making it 5-2 CSUMB. 
  • Still in the fourth inning Martinez scored on an error by the right fielder, followed by a bases loaded walk to Jackie Perales which scored Alba, capped by Ally Alcayaga doubling to center field to score Alba and Olli Perez making it a 9-1 victory for the Otters. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • Reitz-Eaton, Decker, and Schimmel all had one hit. 
  • Schimmel had the only RBI for the 'Cats. 
  • Reitz-Eaton, Serena Perez, and Ashtyn Falor all drew a walk. 
  • Martinez led the Otters with three hits and three RBI. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched three innings allowing nine hits, six runs four of which earned, and two walks while striking out five of 20 batters faced. 
  • Ellie Gilbert allowed two hits, three runs two earned, and two walks against five batters. 
  • Ross pitched the final two innings allowing one hit and struck out one of nine batters faced. 
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • This was the first-ever meeting between CWU and Jessup. 
 
  • CSUMB leads the all-time series 13-6. 
  • The Otters are one a three-game win-streak. 
  • The 'Cats are 2-6 against Monterey Bay in the Tournament of Champions. 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will dive into day two of the Tournament of Champions first facing off against Sonoma State (6-4) on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. on Field 1 of the Pedretti Sports Complex. 
  • CWU will then take on the San Francisco State Gators (8-3) in game two of day two at 3:00 p.m. also on Field 1 of the Pedretti Sports Complex.
