Bombs Away! CWU Sets Team Single Game Record Eight Homeruns in Day One Split at MSUB

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Central Washington University Softball Team used a new team single-game record eight homeruns in game two of Friday's doubleheader against Montana State Billings to earn a day one split against the Yellowjackets.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Yellowjackets started the scoring right out of the gate in the bottom of the first when Lauren Blaschak homered to left center to score Kaylin Galvin and Marleigh Nieto and make it 3-0 MSUB.
  • Serena Perez put the 'Cats on the board in the top of the second with her second homerun of the season scoring Mia Flores in the process to make it 3-2 MSUB.
  • MSUB responded in the bottom of the second when Galvin doubled down the left field line to score Kennedy Dypwick followed by Bryn Lucht doubling to left field to score Galvin and put the 'Jackets up 5-2.
  • The Yellowjackets added on in the third when Dypwick homered to center field to score Avery Gray and Ashley Akers making it 8-2 MSUB.
  • Flores tacked on her first Wildcat career homer in the top of the fourth to make it 8-3 'Jackets.
  • MSUB sealed the deal in the bottom of the fourth when Gray singled up the middle to score Emily Brevig followed by Dypwick clearing the bases with her second homerun of the game to score Gray and Wynter Hurst in the process, still in the fourth Galvin added a homerun of her own to score herself and Nieto to make it 14-3 MSUB.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Flores led the 'Cats with two hits while Perez, Brooke Blocker, and Adriana Rodriguez all contributed one hit.
  • Perez had two RBI while Flores had one.
  • Galvin and Dypwick each had three hits to lead MSUB.
  • Dypwick had six RBI for the 'Jackets.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Payton Kessler pitched the first 2.2 innings allowing 10 hits, eight runs, and two walks while striking out three of 20 batters.
  • Olivia Ross pitched the next inning allowing three hits, four runs, and two walks and struck one out out of seven batters.
  • Ellie Gilbert pitched 0.1 innings allowing two hits and two runs but no walks and struck out one of the three batters she faced.
  • Caitlyn James pitched all five innings for the 'Jackets allowing five hits, three runs, no walks and had one strikeout against 20 batters faced.
 
GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Jazlyn Kalehuawehe started the scoring in the first for MSUB with a double to right center to score Galvin and make it 1-0.
  • Gray and Lucht added on in the second inning with each hitting a homerun with Gray hitting in Peyton Roberge and Hurst and Lucht adding Nieto to the tally to make it 6-0 'Jackets.
  • Blocker drilled her first collegiate homerun in the third inning to score Gabi Casco and Flores to cut it to a 6-3 MSUB lead.
  • Roberge homered to right center in the bottom of the third to make it 7-3 MSUB.
  • Back-to-back homers by Flores and Casco (first collegiate) and later in the fifth inning back-to-back first collegiate career homers by Ashtyn Falor and Ashlyn Cook tied things up at seven apiece.
  • Still in the fifth Karsyn Decker doubled to right field to score Rodriguez followed by Perez sacrificing herself to the shortstop to score Jessica Reitz-Eaton and give CWU the 9-7 lead.
  • Flores followed suit in the fifth with her second homer of the inning and third on the day to score Decker in the process and make it an 11-7 Wildcat lead.
  • The 'Jackets added on in the bottom of the fifth when Lucht and Hurst each homered to cut it to an 11-9 'Cat lead.
  • The 'Cats continued to add on in the seventh inning when Casco added her second homer of the game to score Cady Wilton and Decker in the process to make it 14-9 CWU.
  • Cook added on with a single to right center to score Kayla Brusseau followed by Reitz-Eaton drilling her first collegiate homerun to score Rodriguez and Raeden Young and send the 'Cats to the 18-9 victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • CWU was led by Flores who had four hits while Reitz-Eaton and Cook each added three.
  • Decker, Casco, and Rodriguez had two hits and Blocker and Falor each added one.
  • Casco had four RBI while Reitz-Eaton, Flores, and Blocker all had three.
  • Cook had two RBI while Decker, Perez, and Falor all had one apiece.
  • Casco drew two walks while Reitz-Eaton, Perez, Blocker, and Falor all drew one.
  • Nieto, Lucht, and Hurst all had two hits to lead MSUB.
  • Lucht and Gray each had three RBI for the 'Jackets.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched all seven innings for the crimson and black allowing 10 hits, nine runs, and two walks, but struck five out out of 33 faced batters.
  • Emily Watters pitched four innings allowing five hits, four runs, and four walks but struck out three of 22 batters.
  • James pitched 0.1 innings allowing two hits, and two runs against three batters while Gray allowing four hits and four runs without recording an out against four batters.
  • Elaina Troxell pitched one inning allowing one hit, one run, and one walk against five batters.
  • Shelby Wasilewski pitched 1.1 innings allowing five hits, six runs, and one walk but earned the only other strikeout for MSUB against 11 batters.
  • Hurst pitched 0.1 innings allowing one hit and one run against two batters.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • CWU owns the all-time series 59-35.
  • The 'Cats are 22-18 in Billings over the 'Jackets.
