ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Women's Rugby Team (3-3) earned a hard-fought Senior Day victory over the visiting BYU Cougars (5-6) Saturday afternoon on Steve Hertling Field at Tomlinson Stadium.
"I'm just happy we could get the win for our seniors' last match in Tomlinson," CWU Head Women's Rugby Coach Matt Ramirez said. "It was a tough day out there and full credit to BYU for bringing the pressure like they do each matchup. We'll dig into the film, but we need to improve in our tenacity to nail the basics and choosing effort over everything. Right now, it's all about recovery as we head into next week and then the playoffs."
Jessica Postle earned the first points of the match at the 9:30 mark and backed it up with a successful conversion kick. The Cougars mustered up one try before the half but failed on the conversion kick to make it 7-5 CWU at the half break. BYU came out of the half and took their first lead at the 46:15 mark and held strong until
Linda Chavira broke through for the 'Cats first points of the second half with a try at the 64-minute mark and Postle tacked on the conversion kick to make it 14-10 CWU.
Lilly Thomas added on for CWU at the 74-minute mark to seal the deal for the crimson and black as they went on to the 19-10 victory.
The 'Cats celebrated five seniors after the conclusion of the match:
Shaylee Coulter-Fa'amafu,
Maleena Mero,
Philomena Namosimalua,
Winnie Namosimalua, and Kerena Tinoisama. On behalf of Wildcat Women's Rugby and the entirety of CWU Athletics thank you for all of your contributions over the years!
