Wildcats Split Day One Against Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Central Washington University baseball team (18-16, 12-10 GNAC) started the day rough but rebounded to split the opening doubleheader of the series Saturday afternoon against Western Oregon (10-21, 7-15 GNAC) by scores of 0-6 and 9-5.

GAME 1: 

SCORING

  • The Wolves struck first in the second inning when Calvin Tenorio hit a single through the right side, driving in Tyler Mohler and John Oleson to take a 2-0 lead. 

  • Western Oregon got another run after Daniel Charron walked Zane Garvey with the bases loaded and Trey Nelson scored. 

  • The offense continued for WOU as Owen Bischoff drove a single through the left side to bring Andre Jackson II and Tenorio in to give the Wolves a 5-0 lead. 

  • The Wolves got one more run in the second as Oleson singled to right field and Bischoff scored. 

PITCHING

  • Daniel Charron pitched five and two-third innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, facing 30 batters. 

  • Braden Zadow pitched two and one-third innings, allowing zero runs and two hits, facing 10 batters. 

HITTING

  • The Wildcats reached base seven times by hits and walks. 

  

GAME 2: 

SCORING

  • The Wildcats strike early as Ben Leid sends a pitch over center field for a three-run homer in the first inning. 

  • Zane Garvey answered for the Saints in the third, doubling down the left-field line to drive in Cedric Gatter. 

  • Nate Nadeau gave Central another run with a sacrifice flyout as Jake Felton tagged up at third base and scored in the fourth inning. 

  • The Crimson and Black opened up the scoring in the fifth inning, scoring four runs off a bases-loaded walk by Nadeau, a single from Birch, another bases-loaded walk by Varner Jr., and a hit-by-pitch by Brandham Ponce as WOU's pitching couldn't find a way out of the jam. 

  • Western Oregon's offense found inspiration from CWU in the fifth and responded with three runs off a bases-loaded walk by Owen Bischoff, a sacrifice fly by Collin Irwin, and a single by John Oleson to trail 4-9. 

  • The Wolves got a last chance run in the seventh inning as Irwin grounded out to the shortstop and allowed Garvey to score to make it 9-5. 

PITCHING

  • Jonathan Garza II pitched four and one-third innings, allowing four runs on three hits, and striking out five of the 21 batters he faced. 

  • Kellen Berg pitched two and two-third innings, allowing one run on three hits, and striking out one of the 10 batters he faced. 

HITTING: 

  • The Wildcats reached base 16 times by hits and walks. 


SERIES HISTORY: 

  • Central trails the all-time series 57-134. 

  • These were the teams' 87th and 88th games played in Monmouth, Ore.
