Wildcats Suffer Defeat in Pair of Nail-Biting Games Against the Saints

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington University softball team fell to the Saint Martin's Saints in both games of Sunday's doubleheader.

"We battled hard in both games today. I thought Payton pitched really well in game one. We needed a few people to step up when we had runners in scoring position and couldn't get them."

GAME 1:

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
  • Ashley Goodale got the Saints on the board in top of the third inning when she flied out to left field, scoring Analise Griffiths on an RBI sacrifice fly.
  • In the fourth inning, Serena Perez reached base on a shortstop's fielding error, allowing Karsyn Decker to score and put the Wildcats on the board.
  • Griffiths doubled to left center in the seventh inning, scoring Schultz and giving SMU the lead, 2-1.
HITTING: PITCHING:
  • Payton Kessler went the distance, pitching seven innings and giving up just one earned run on three hits, while striking out two and walking three across 28 batters faced.
 

GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
  • Amanda Peterson singled to left field in the first inning, scoring Shelby Lawson and Heather Ebner, putting the Saints up early, 2-0.
  • Kekai Schultz flied out to center field in the first inning, scoring Haley Agena on a RBI sacrifice flyout, 3-0.
  • Mia Flores reached on a throwing error in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Gabi Casco and Jessica Reitz-Eaton, getting the 'Cats back into the game, 3-2.
  • Lawson then singled to center field in the second inning, scoring Elissa Dewees and extending the lead for SMU, 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Serena Perez singled to left field, scoring Karsyn Decker and inching CWU back into the game, 4-3.
  • Ebner hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning, extending the lead for SMU, 5-3.
  • Ebner doubled to left center in the sixth inning, scoring Ava Heston and Analise Griffiths, 7-3.
  • Flores singles to center field in the seventh inning, scoring Decker and bringing the Crimson and Black back into the game, 7-4.
  • Perez singled to center field in the seventh inning, scoring Kayla Brusseau, 7-5.
HITTING:  
PITCHING:
  • Ellie Gilbert pitched five innings, giving up seven runs on 12 hits and issuing one walk while facing 27 batters.
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched one and two third innings, allowing no runs on one hit and recording one strikeout against six batters faced.
  • Olivia Ross pitched one third innings as she faced one batter.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Central Washington leads the all-time series 96-62.
  • These were the 68th and 69th games played in Ellensburg, Wash.
