Wildcats Ride Momentum in 42-13 Victory over Visiting UTPB

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The 13th-ranked Central Washington University Football Team (6-2, 6-0 LSC) put together one of their best team performances of the season to secure a crucial 42-13 victory over the visiting UT Permian Basin Falcons (5-3, 4-2 LSC) Saturday evening from Steve Hertling Field at Tomlinson Stadium.

QUOTING CWU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH SCOTT POWER:

"I felt like we were in control most of the night. There were some possessions that I think about in the red zone, we missed a field goal, turned the ball over in the red zone which you never want to do, those two empty possessions make you feel different about things. There were some drives in the second half that we would like to have back, but we got off to a good start and were able to run the ball for the most part pretty consistently. I thought our backs ran hard and our offensive line, I thought we had a good plan run game-wise and I think we executed it but I think they did a good job mixing their looks and gave us a few different things than what some other defenses have done to us this year. I'm pleased with how we played on offense and I think there's some plays that when we watch it back, we're going to want back. I'm glad that we responded the way we did tonight on defense. I felt like we were in control most of the night on defense. I'm proud of the effort and intensity we played with on defense, I feel like we've been making strides all year long defensively, last week was a little bit of a step back so I'm glad to see us get back on track tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Wildcat defense started the evening out strong, despite allowing a first down, the defense shut down the Falcon offense thanks to a huge tackle for loss by Brycen Indell and King Williams on third down to force a punt.
  • The 'Cats immediately got to work on the offensive front as Ryder Bumgarner and Antoine Lee rumbled their way down the field paired with Justin Brennan finding Samaje Featherstone for a first down 10-yard reception to lead to Brennan connecting with Mason Juergens for a 15-yard touchdown and after David Weber drilled the PAT, the 'Cats led 7-0 with 7:29 left in the first.
  • The CWU defense picked up right where they left off and forced a three-and-out thanks to a big pass breakup from Isaiah Paul and key tackle from Cooper MacPherson.
  • Lee and Bumgarner once again took over the game and paired with Brennan finding Isaac Torres and Juergens for 10 and 16-yards respectfully to eventually set up Brennan to run in the ball for six points from one-yard out and after Weber's PAT the 'Cats took the 14-0 lead with 11 seconds left in the first.
  • Connor Goff ended the first quarter stopping Cheno Navarrette for no gain to send the teams to the second with CWU on top 14-0.
  • The Falcons were able to find some success as quarterback Nate TenBarge found success on the ground and paired with a CWU penalty, UTPB found themselves in Wildcat territory, but the 'Cats defense held strong and a pass breakup by Paul on fourth down gave the 'Cats the ball back.
  • Brennan immediately connected with Featherstone for a quick 20-yard gain and followed that up two plays later with another 10-yard connection between the two, but the 'Cats momentum stopped there as the UTPB defense forced the 'Cats to settle for a field goal attempt that sailed wide left to keep the score 14-0.
  • The Falcons once again turned to their ground game as TenBarge, Micai Thompson, and Aaron DeLeon maneuvered their way into CWU territory, aided by another penalty on the 'Cats, but a tackle for loss by Trishion Sullivan followed by a pass breakup from Brycen Indell forced the Falcons to punt but a miscue by the punter accidentally downed the ball at the UTPB 44-yard line to give the 'Cats the ball back.
  • The 'Cats made the most of the short field as Justice Taylor and Bumgarner pounded their way toward the endzone, eventually seeing Bumgarner run it in from 13-yards out and with the Weber PAT, the 'Cats lead was up to 21-0 with 1:43 left in the second.
  • The UTPB offense caught fire on their next drive to try and score before the half as Braxton Baker connected with Heston Kelly, George Sims, and Navarrette for some big gains while Navarrette added another big gain on the ground and with a couple Wildcat penalties, the Falcons were set up deep in CWU territory. Baker found Traylen Suel for a three-yard touchdown to put UTPB on the board but the PAT was doinked off the right goal post to make it a 21-6 game heading into the half.
  • The 'Cats struck on their opening possession after the half as Bumgarner and Taylor tackled the ground game while Brennan connected with Juergens and Torres for a few short yardage connections before Brennan eventually found Torres in the endzone for a 26-yard touchdown catch and with the successful PAT by Weber, the 'Cats led 28-6 with 9:35 left in the third.
  • The Wildcat defense mustered up a big stop to force the Falcons to punt however the Falcon defense eventually earned the ball for UTPB even though the Wildcats maneuvered their way into the Falcon redzone thanks to big rushes from Lee and Ki'Marree Washington as well as a couple big chunk connections from Brennan to Torres and Juergens to eventually see Nicholas Butler intercept the ball in the endzone for UTPB.
  • Falcons wrapped up the third quarter with Baker connecting with Suel for a nine-yard gain, but the 'Cats led 28-6 to enter the fourth.
  • Khalil Eichelberger threw his name into the ground attack for the Falcons to begin the fourth while Baker found Aiden Serrano for a pair of good chunk catches before finding Suel for a big 34-yard connection that eventually set up Baker finding JT Seagreaves for a six-yard touchdown and after the Diego Chavarria PAT, the 'Cats lead was cut to 28-13 with 12:10 left in the game.
  • The Wildcats offense stalled as the Falcons forced a three-and-out forcing the 'Cats to punt for the first time on the night, and a short punt set up the Falcons at the 'Cats 40-yard line to begin their next drive.
  • UTPB managed to rush their way to the 'Cats 18-yard line, but a pass breakup by Omar Lazcano on fourth down gave the 'Cats the ball back with 8:51 to go in the game.
  • The UTPB defense however, had different plans and forced their second-straight three-and-out to give the Falcons the ball back at their own 45-yard line.
  • The Falcons quickly made their way into CWU territory thanks to back-to-back 10-yard connections from Baker to Suel and Ryder Ribitzki but a Brian Kuhn sack of seven yards forced the Falcons into a third and 17 scenario and thanks to a quarterback hurry from Williams, Lazcano was able to pick up Baker and return it 75 yards for the pick six touchdown and with the Weber PAT, the 'Cats now led 35-13 with 5:40 left in the game.
  • The Wildcat defense rode the momentum and got a big fourth down stop thanks to a key tackle by Sullivan to give the 'Cats the ball back with 4:53 left in the game at the UTPB 39-yard line.
  • Lee immediately found 13-yards and was followed by Bumgarner taking it from there, eventually running it in from 11-yards out and after Weber's PAT, the 'Cats lead ballooned to 42-13 with 15 seconds to go.
  • UTPB took a knee and let the clock expire as the 'Cats earned the 42-13 victory.
