Wildcats Make the Most of First Conference Trip with Programs First Win in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 12th-ranked Central Washington University Football Team (3-2, 3-0 LSC) made their first conference road trip to the Angelo State Rams (1-4, 1-2 LSC) and came away with a 41-14 victory to stay undefeated in conference play.

QUOTING CWU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH SCOTT POWER:

"I'm really proud of our players and our coaches. This was a complete team win down here in Texas in a place where CWU has never won before. To come down here and win in the way they won, I'm just really proud of these guys tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams stood in a stalemate to begin the game with both teams forcing a punt before the 'Cats second drive stalled out at their own 37-yard line to give the Rams the ball for their second drive of the game.
  • The Rams found success thanks to massive gains by quarterback Ayden Arp to maneuver ASU into Wildcat territory for the first time, however, a fumble by Arp was recovered by Joseph Jefferson II.
  • The 'Cats took advantage of the fumble with Ryder Bumgarner and Antoine Lee slicing their way down the field and with a Justin Brennan to Andrew Molloy 10-yard catch sprinkled in the 'Cats found themselves into Rams territory for the first time, eventually seeing Bumgarner punch it in from a yard out to give the 'Cats the 6-0 lead with 2:02 left in the first.
  • The ASU offense picked up their momentum where they left off with Ashton Dickens ending the first quarter with a 10-yard rush to set the Rams up at the 50-yard line to begin the second quarter with CWU leading 6-0.
  • The Wildcat defense couldn't get a much needed third down stop and forcing the Rams offense into a third and six at the CWU 35-yard line, Cale Allen came up with a huge interception to put the crimson and black offense back onto the field from their own 37-yard line.
  • Four plays was all the 'Cats needed as Brennan found Isaac Torres for a huge 35-yard gain followed by Bumgarner adding 28-yards on the ground over two plays before the drive was capped by Brennan finding AJ Perez for a 29-yard touchdown and with David Weber hitting the PAT attempt, the 'Cats found themselves up 13-0 with 10:37 left in the second.
  • The Ram offense once again found the ability to move the ball, despite fumbling and recovering the ball twice, to set themselves up deep in CWU territory, but a huge fourth and seven tackle by Brycen Indell gave the 'Cats the ball back with 5:38 left on the clock before the half break.
  • Brennan took it from there, ripping off a 76-yard touchdown run on the first play after the turnover on downs and after Weber's PAT, the 'Cats held the 20-0 advantage with 5:26 left on the clock.
  • The Rams ran it for no gain thanks to a tackle from Brian Kuhn and on the next play saw Kayo Wallace intercept Arp and return it to the ASU 30-yard line to set up the CWU offense for their next drive.
  • Once again, one play was all the 'Cats needed as Brennan connected with Perez for his second touchdown on the night, this time on a 30-yard connection and after Weber's PAT attempt sailed through the uprights, the 'Cats saw their lead balloon to 27-0 with 4:49 left before the half.
  • Each teams defense forced a punt on the next two drives with the Rams taking over with a minute left before the half and ASU made the most of their short time with Dickens making a huge 59-yard touchdown run and with Paden Maass hitting the PAT, the Rams cut it to a 27-7 game heading into the half.
  • The Rams began the second half with the ball and they kept on trend for the night, dicing their way deep into CWU territory but a fourth and five at the CWU five-yard line failed as Brady Phillips tackled Donny Bishop at the two-yard line to force a turnover on downs.
  • The Wildcats managed to avoid the trap and get the ball out of their own red zone before Brennan connected with Torres for a huge 47-yard gain, but two plays later saw Bumgarner fumble the ball and the Rams recover it to take back over.
  • The crimson and black defense did what they needed to do, forcing a three-and-out thanks to a third down tackle by Peyton Cunningham on the elusive Arp.
  • Angelo State's defense forced the 'Cats into a third and long scenario, but Brennan found Mason Juergens for a big 14-yard connection and a first down before the two linked up on another third down for a duplicate 14-yard connection to end the third quarter and set the 'Cats up at the ASU 40-yard line with CWU leading 27-7.
  • Bumgarner quickly grabbed three yards on the first play of the fourth quarter before Brennan found Juergens for an eight-yard gain, then found Samaje Featherstone for a 21-yard reception, and two plays later Brennan punched it in from eight yards out and after Weber's PAT was good the 'Cats now led 34-7 with 12:52 left in the game.
  • Angelo State saw a quick four yards on the ground to begin their next drive from Dickens before Arp connected with Preston Baker for a 44-yard catch to set up Dickens who pounded his way all the way to the CWU one-yard line where Arp found the endzone on a fourth and one after Phillips and Ty Evans held down the goal line the previous three attempts, but with Maass's PAT attempt, the Rams made it a 34-14 CWU lead with 8:39 left in the game.
  • Featherstone ran his way to his longest kick return of the season, running it 75 yards to the ASU 25-yard line to set up the 'Cats offense where Bumgarner took over to get the 'Cats to the ASU two-yard line to set up Brennan who found Wiley Donnerberg in the endzone for a two-yard touchdown and with Weber's PAT attempt, the 'Cats led 41-14 with 5:02 left in the game.
  • The Rams found three big gains on their next drive before David Jones forced Israel Kaloso to fumble the ball and it was recovered by Allen at the CWU 35-yard line to give the ball back to the 'Cats who wound down the clock to seal the 41-14 road victory.
