Wildcats Drop Pair in Day One of the Nighthawks Invitational

NAMPA, Idaho – The Central Washington University Softball Team fell in a pair of games on day one of the Nighthawks Invitational.

GAME 1:
 
  • Score: Central Washington (6), San Francisco State (12)

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • San Francisco State got on the board in the top of the first when Taylor Wilson was caught stealing to give enough time for Olivia Mares to score and make it 1-0 SFSU.
  • Hallie Sehlin tied things up in the bottom of the second when she singled to left center field to score Jessica Reitz-Eaton.
  • The Gators responded in the top of the third when Malia Morreira singled up the middle to score Anyssa Luttig and Ashley Rocha and make it 3-1 SFSU.
  • Jadyn Holdren responded for CWU in the bottom of the third with a single to center field to score Lizzy Turpen and cut it to a 3-2 Gator lead.
  • SFSU pulled away in the fourth inning, starting with Marissa Jordan singling to left field to score Desiree Gomez followed by Rocha reaching on a fielder's choice to allow enough time for Kate Nelson to score which was backed by Morreira doubling to left center field to score Jordan and Ariana Mallari and Olivia Moscardi singling to left center field to score Morreira and Shaunessy Cardwell to make it 9-2 SFSU.
  • Rocha used an error by the shortstop to her advantage to score in the top of the fifth to make it 10-2 SFSU.
  • The Wildcats fended off the run rule in the bottom of the fifth when Holdren homered to cut it to 10-3.
  • McKayla Cable added another in the bottom of the sixth when she singled to score Sehlin and cut it to a 10-4 Gator lead.
  • SFSU tacked on two more in the top of the seventh when Mares doubled through the left side to score Rocha followed by Cardwell singling down the right field line to score Mares and make it a 12-4 SFSU lead.
  • Reitz-Eaton put the 'Cats on the board in the bottom of the seventh sacrificing herself to the shortstop to score Joelie Eder followed by Sehlin sacrificing herself to score Melise Brown but the 'Cats would fall 12-6.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Holdren led the 'Cats with two hits while Cable, Eder, Brown, Sehlin, and Izzy Vargas all had one hit.
  • Holdren and Sehlin had two RBI each while Cable and Reitz-Eaton both added one.
  • Holdrewn, Eder, Brown, Reitz-Eaton, Sehlin, and Turpen all made it home once.
  • Eder and Turpen drew two walks each while Cable, Holdren, Brown, and Vargas all drew one.
  • Moscardi led SFSU with three hits while Mares and Morreira added two and six other Gators added one hit each.
  • Morreira had four RBI while Moscardi had two and four other Gators added one.
  • Rocha drew two walks while Morreira, Cardwell, Nelson and Mia Pamlona all drew one walk each.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Reese Anderson pitched the first three innings allowing four hits, three runs with only two earned, no walks, and one strikeout against 13 batters.
  • Alex Flohr pitched the next 0.2 innings allowing five hits, six runs, and two walks against nine batters.
  • Brooke Baker pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing four hits, three runs with two earned, and four walks while getting one strikeout against 18 batters.
  • Kharime Caratachea pitched the first five innings allowing three hits, three runs, five walks, and four strikeouts against 24 batters.
  • Alexis Perez pitched the final two innings allowing four hits, three runs, and three walks against 12 batters.
 
GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Keana Bell started the game off with a single down the left field line to score Ava Clark and Jami Obringer and make it a quick 2-0 NNU lead.
  • Cable put the 'Cats on the board in the top of the second with a single through the left side which scored Sehlin and cut it to a 2-1 NNU lead.
  • The Nighthawks struck again in the bottom of the fourth when Riglee Peterson singled through the left side to score Paisley Noyer and make it 3-1 NNU.
  • Brooke Baker sacrificed herself in the top of the fifth to score Cable and make it a one run game once again, 3-2 NNU.
  • Annie Swanson tacked on another in the bottom of the sixth with a single through right field to score Mekhia Wagner, which was backed by Obringer singling up the middle to score Swanson and Peterson and make it a 6-2 Nighthawk lead.
  • The 'Cats saw Cable single to right center field to score Holdren in the top of the seventh followed by a fielder's choice that scored Cable, but the comeback ended there as NNU won 6-4.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable had three hits to lead CWU while Baker added two and Holdren and Sehlin both tacked on one.
  • Cable had two RBI while Baker and Eder added on one each.
  • Cable made it home twice while Holdren and Sehlin each made it home once.
  • Holdren, Cable, Vargas, and Adriana Rodriguez all drew one walk.
  • NNU was paced by Peterson who had three hits while five other Nighthawks had one hit apiece.
  • Obringer and Bell each had two RBI while Peterson and Swanson added one each.
  • Clark drew three walks while Obringer and Emma Bumatay both drew one each.
  • Six different Nighthawks made it back home.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched all six innings for CWU allowing eight hits, six runs with four being earned, and five walks while striking out seven of 31 batters.
  • Miah Lusk pitched all seven innings for the Nighthawks allowing seven hits, four runs with only three earned, and four walks but struck out 11 of 32 batters faced.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • San Francisco State now leads CWU 14-8.
  • CWU is 4-6 against SFSU in the last 10 matchups.
 
  • CWU now leads the all-time series 85-43.
  • The 'Cats are 35-25 in Nampa against the Nighthawks.
  • The crimson and black are 1-9 in the last 10 matchups against NNU.
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will look forward to two more clashes against the Gators to wrap up the Nighthawks Invitational tomorrow.
