Wildcats Split on Final Day of the Nighthawks Invitational

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Softball Team earned a split against the San Francisco State Gators on the final day of the Nighthawks Invitational Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Gators got on the board first when Olivia Mares stole home followed by Malia Morreira scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 SFSU.
  • Jadyn Holdren helped the 'Cats get on the board in the top of the second after she reached on a fielder's choice which scored Hallie Sehlin to make it 2-1. 
  • The Gators responded in the bottom of the third after Morreira sacrificed herself to the pitcher to score Ashley Rocha to make it 3-1 SFSU.
  • McKayla Cable made it a one-run game once again in the top of the fourth when she singled to center field to score Izzy Vargas.
  • In the next at-bat Brooke Baker gave the 'Cats their first lead of the day with a double to left center field to score Cable and Holdren and make it 4-3 CWU.
  • San Francisco State took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth after Olivia Moscardi doubled to left center field to score Taylor Wilson followed by Marissa Jordan hitting a three-run home run to score Deziree Gomez and Kate Nelson in the process to make it a 7-4 SFSU lead.
  • Still in the bottom of the fourth, Shaunessy Cardwell singled to center field to score Morreira and Mares and make it a 9-4 Gator lead.
  • Kasi Thomas doubled down the left field line to score Alex Flohr and cut it to a 9-5 San Francisco State lead in the top of the fifth.
  • Mia Pamplona singled up the middle to score Nelson for a SFSU response in the bottom of the fifth and to make it 10-5 Gators.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Rapp reached on an error by the shortstop to allow enough time for Moscardi and Anyssa Luttig to score to make it a 12-5 game in favor of SFSU.
  • Vargas gave the 'Cats one last run with a triple to right field in the top of the seventh to score Jessica Reitz-Eaton and make it a 12-6 game. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • Baker and Vargas led CWU with two hits each while Holdren, Cable, Sehlin, Reitz-Eaton, Thomas, and Mia Flores all added one.
  • Baker had two RBI while Holdren, Cable, Thomas, and Vargas all had one. 
  • Holdren, Cable, Sehlin, Flohr, Reitz-Eaton, and Vargas all made it home once.
  • Joelie Eder and Sehlin drew one walk each.
  • Mares, Morreira, Moscardi, and Nelson led the Gators with two hits each while Cardwell, Wilson, Pamplona, Jordan, and Rocha all had one.
  • Jordan led SFSU with three RBI while Rapp and Cardwell each added two and Morreira, Moscardi, and Pamplona all had one. 
  • Mares, Cardwell, Nelson, and Rocha all drew one walk each.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Ellie Gilbert pitched the first 3.1 innings allowing six hits, seven runs, and one walk against 17 batters.
  • Baker pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing seven hits, five runs with only two being earned, and three walks while striking out one of 19 batters.
  • Alexis Perez pitched the first 3.2 innings allowing five hits, four runs, and two walks while striking out two of 22 batters. 
  • Kharime Caratachea pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing five hits, two runs, no walks, and earned one strikeout against 15 batters.
 
GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Vargas gave the 'Cats the lead in the top of the second when she doubled to right center to score Melise Brown, Lizzy Turpen, and Adriana Rodriguez and make it a 3-0 CWU lead.
  • The Gators responded in the bottom of the second when Jordan scored on a throwing error by the catcher followed by Luttig sacrificing herself to the third baseman to score Nelson and make it a 3-2 game in favor of CWU.
  • Rodriguez singled to the pitcher in the top of the third to score Jenna Markuson followed by Turpen doubling to right center field to score Rodriguez and make it a 5-2 CWU lead.
  • Holdren tacked on another in the top of the fourth with a home run to right center field to increase the Wildcat lead to 6-2.
  • In the top of the sixth Markuson reached on a throwing error by the third baseman which allowed Reitz-Eaton to score and make it a 7-2 game.
  • The seventh inning onslaught by the 'Cats began when Vargas singled to center field to score Brown and Turpen followed by Holdren doubling to center field to score Vargas and then Cable singling through the left side to score Holdren and make it an 11-2 CWU lead.
  • Baker kept it going with a single up the middle to score Cable followed by Turpen doubling to right center field to score Markuson and Baker, then Brown singled to left center field to score Turpen and Rodriguez and made it a 16-2 CWU lead.
  • Cable added on with a single through the left side to score Vargas with Baker concluding the scoring with a single to right center field to score Holdren and seal the 18-2 CWU victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished with 20 hits led by Rodriguez with four followed by Cable, Turpen, and Vargas with three, Holdren and Baker had two and Flores, Markuson, and Brown all added one.
  • Vargas had five RBI while Turpen had three, Holdren, Cable, Baker, and Brown all had two and Rodriguez had one RBI. 
  • Holdren, Rodriguez, Turpen all made it home three times while Marksuon, Brown, and Vargas made it home twice and Cable, Baker, and Reitz-Eaton made it home one time. 
  • Brown and Holdren each drew two walks while Baker, Flores, and Turpen all drew one each.
  • The Gators were held to six hits led by Jordan with two.
  • Luttig had the only RBI for the Gators.
  • Jordan and Nelson were the only Gators to make it home.
  • Wilson drew the only walk for SFSU.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched all seven innings allowing six hits, two runs with only one earned, and one walk while getting one strikeout against 26 batters.
  • Tori Hernandez pitched the first 2.2 innings allowing four hits, five runs, and four walks against 16 batters.
  • Perez pitched the next 3.2 innings allowing 11 hits, 10 runs with eight earned, three walks, and three strikeouts against 26 batters.
  • Caratachea pitched the final 0.2 innings allowing five hits, three runs with only one earned, and no walks against seven batters.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • San Francisco State leads the all-time series 15-9.
  • CWU is 4-6 against the Gators in the last 10 meetings.
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will head back to California to participate in the NorCal Crossover in Tracy, Calif. At the Legacy Fields Sports Complex.
  • CWU will face Menlo and Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday, February 27 at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
  • The 'Cats will then see Stanislaus State and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, February 28 at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • The crimson and black will wrap up their time in California with a rematch against the third-ranked Cal State East Bay Pioneers on Sunday, March 1 at 9:00 a.m.
