Wildcats Earn Split on Day One of the NorCal Crossover

TRACY, Calif. – The Central Washington University Softball Team earned a split in day one of the NorCal Crossover Friday afternoon.

  • The Oaks struck first in the second inning when Emma Medina singled to score Sierra Pasco which was followed by Sydney Costello being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Tacia Kahalewai.
  • Still in the second inning, Lucy Brooks sacrificed herself to the shortstop to score Aleatha Buchner which was followed by Gabrielle Rodriguez singling to left field to score Medina and Kahalewai doubling to score Rodriguez and Makayla Mentzer to make it a 7-0 Menlo lead.
  • Brooks tacked on one more in the third inning when she tripled to right center to score Costello and make it an 8-0 MC lead.
  • Joelie Eder sacrificed herself in the top of the fourth inning which allowed McKayla Cable to score and make it an 8-1 Menlo lead.
  • Eder added on in the sixth with a double to center field to score Brooke Baker but the CWU comeback ended there as Menlo went on for the 8-2 victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats saw six different players earn one hit apiece: Jadyn Holdren, Cable, Eder, Kasi Thomas, Jenna Markuson, Adriana Rodriguez, and Lizzy Turpen.
  • Eder had the only two RBI for CWU in the game.
  • Cable drew the only walk.
  • Medina led the Oaks with two hits with Brooks, Rodriguez, Kahalewai, and Costello all logging one hit.
  • Brooks, Rodriguez, and Kahalewai all had two RBI while Medina and Costello added one.
  • Pasco drew three walks while seven other Oaks drew one each.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched the first 1.2 innings allowing two hits, seven runs, four walks, and earned one strikeout against 12 batters.
  • Baker pitched the next 3.1 innings allowing four hits, one run that wasn't earned, and five walks while striking out one of 18 batters.
  • Alex Flohr pitched the final inning allowing no hits, no runs, and one walk against three batters.
  • Alysia Elizarrey pitched all seven innings for the Oaks allowing six hits, two runs, one walk, and earned one strikeout against 27 batters.

  • Mia Flores put the 'Cats on the board in the top of the first with a single to left field to score Cable.
  • The Lumberjacks responded in a big way, first when Shelby Shanks singled to left field to score Alyssa Ramirez followed by Marissa Brody getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Hailee Moore.
  • Still in the first inning, Marisol Gomez doubled to right field to score Shanks and Katlyn Gifford which was followed by Ariana Bottel singling up the middle to score Gomez and Brody and make it a 6-1 Lumberjack lead.
  • Shanks added on one more in the second inning with a triple to score Gifford and make it 7-1 Cal Poly Humboldt.
  • The 'Cats began their comeback attempt in the fourth inning, first when Melise Brown doubled up the middle to score Jessica Reitz-Eaton followed by Turpen singling to right field to score Brown and Vargas following with a single to right field to score Turpen and Baker adding on a single to right field to score Vargas and make it a 7-5 lead for the 'Jacks.
  • In the sixth inning, Flores was hit by a pitch to score Vargas and Hallie Sehlin hitting a single to score Cable to tie it up at seven apiece.
  • The 'Cats took the lead in the sixth when Thomas was hit by a pitch to score Baker followed by Turpen singling up the middle to score Flores and make it a 9-7 CWU lead.
  • The 'Jacks tacked on one more when Matea Muraoka sacrificed herself to score Andrea Maldonado and cut it to a one-run CWU lead.
  • Baker put the nail in the coffin in the seventh with a single up the middle to score Holdren and make it a 10-8 CWU victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable, Baker, Brown, and Turpen led the 'Cats with two hits apiece while Holdren, Flores, Sehlin, and Vargas all added one hit each.
  • Baker, Flores, and Turpen logged two RBI each while Sehlin, Thomas, Brown, and Vargas all added one.
  • Sehlin drew two walks while Cable, Flores, and Brown all drew one.
  • Shanks led the 'Jacks with three hits followed by Gifford with two and six other 'Jacks snatching one hit apiece.
  • Shanks, Gomez, and Bottel all had two RBI each while Brody and Muraoka added one each.
  • Gifford drew two walks while Shanks, Gomez, and Rylee Banks all drew one each.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Reese Anderson pitched the first six innings allowing 11 hits, eight runs, five walks, and three strikeouts against 36 batters.
  • Ellie Gilbert pitched the final inning allowing no hits, no runs, no walks, and one strikeout against three batters.
  • Bottel pitched the first 3.1 innings for CPH allowing five hits, four runs, two walks, and one strikeout against 17 batters.
  • Mason Hatton pitched the next 0.1 innings allowing two hits, one run, one walk, and one strikeout against four batters.
  • Lily Fournier pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing five hits, five runs, two walks, and five strikeouts against 20 batters.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • CWU and Menlo are now tied at 2-2 all-time.
  • The 'Jacks lead the all-time series 59-13.
