ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Central Washington University Football Head Coach Scott Power has found the 'Cats next Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach in former Southern Oregon Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach Tyler Stinn.
"I am excited to welcome Tyler to our coaching staff as our Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach," Power said. "Tyler played for us at Marian and was a key piece of our back-to-back National Championship appearances. He is very familiar with our defensive system, and he has been very successful as a coordinator at two different schools. His energy and passion for the game, along with his knowledge, will help maximize our players' potential. We are excited to welcome Tyler and his family to Ellensburg."
Stinn is no stranger to the Pacific Northwest after spending the past three seasons as the Defensive Coordinator at Southern Oregon. He helped lead the Raiders to a 17-14 record with a 12-10 Frontier Conference record during his three-year span. While with SOU, he helped 20 Raiders earn All-Frontier honors with six earning First Team honors and Noah Turnbull being named the Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Year as well as a First Team NAIA All-American, and Spencer Kuffel earning Academic All-American.
Before joining the Raiders, Stinn was with his alma mater Marian for seven seasons from 2016-22. He originally worked with the outside linebackers for the 2016 and 2017 seasons and in 2018 he was tabbed full-time assistant coach helping coach the defensive line for two seasons. While coaching the defensive line he helped Marian rank top 10 in the NAIA in sacks with the Knights finishing eighth in 2018 and sixth in 2019. He was crucial in the development of MSFA Defensive Player of the Year Chad Scaggs and coached Marian's all-time leader in sacks and All-American Mac Dutra. He switched to coaching the safeties for the 2020 season.
In 2021, Stinn was promoted to the Defensive Coordinator for the Knights for two seasons. In his first season as the Defensive Coordinator, the Knights ranked ninth in the NAIA in yards allowed per game and topped the association with 47 sacks in 12 games. While serving as the Knights Defensive Coordinator, Stinn helped lead the program to a 18-5 record with a 12-2 MSFA record. The Knights made it to the NAIA Playoffs each season, winning their first-round game before falling in the second round each season.
Stinn also spent three seasons as a volunteer assistant with the women's lacrosse team at Marian, helping the team make their first NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2019. He assisted Lebanon High School in 2015 by coaching the defensive backs before his stint at Marian.
"It's a privilege for my family and me to be a part of this program," Stinn said. "I am excited to get to work with our players and staff and to add to the rich history here at Central Washington University!"
A native of Noblesville, Ind., Stinn graduated from Marian in Indianapolis in 2015 with a degree in Accounting and Finance. He is a former member of the Marian Football Team from 2010-14, becoming a two-year starter at safety and helping the team to the 2012 NAIA National Championship. He also helped the Knights to three MSFA Mideast titles and earned three MSFA All-Academic team honors.
