Wildcats Split with Wolves on GNAC-Opening Day

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University Softball Team earned a GNAC-opening split against Western Oregon Friday afternoon.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Sydney Conklin drew a bases loaded walk in the first inning to score Victoria Zimmerman and give WOU the 1-0 lead.
  • Mia Flores gave CWU their first lead of the day in the third inning with a single to right center field which scored Kayla Brusseau and McKayla Cable to make it 2-1 CWU.
  • The Wolves tied it up in the fourth when Reghann Fairbairn singled to left field to score Brooklyn Schneidt however Cable responded in the bottom of the fourth with a double to right center field to score Brooke Baker and Jadyn Holdren to make it a 4-2 CWU lead.
  • The Wolves earned another in the sixth when Fairbairn singled to right field to score Hope Bodak and cut it to a 4-3 CWU lead heading into the final inning.
  • WOU tied it up in the seventh when Braeli Martin reached due to a fielding error by the first baseman which scored Zimmerman which was followed by Conklin getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Madelynne Hommel and in the next at bat saw Lauren Mauer and Martin score on wild pitches to make it 7-4 WOU.
  • Still in the seventh, Fairbairn singled to left field to score Schneidt and Conklin followed by Jocelyn Rush singling to left center field to score Fairbairn and Schneidt to make it a 10-4 WOU victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable and Kasi Thomas led CWU with two hits each while Holdren, Baker, Brusseau, Flores, and Izzy Vargas all logged one hit each.
  • Cable and Flores had two RBI.
  • Baker, Brusseau, and Adriana Rodriguez all drew one walk.
  • Fairbairn led WOU with three hits while Zimmerman added two and Hommel, Schneidt, Rush, and Gracie Nelson added one.
  • Fairbairn had three RBI while Conklin and Rush had two and Martin added one.
  • Hommel, Mauer, Conklin, and Schneidt all drew one walk.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched 4.2 innings allowing six hits, three runs, two walks, and earned two strikeouts against 22 batters.
  • Alex Flohr pitched 1.1 innings allowing one hit, one run that wasn't earned, no walks, and earned a strikeout against seven batters.
  • Reese Anderson pitched one inning allowing two hits, six runs with five earned, and two walks against eight batters.
  • Abby Stansbury pitched the first 3.2 innings for the Wolves allowing four hits, three runs that were not earned, one walk, and had one strikeout against 19 batters.
  • Kennedy Abbas pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing five hits, one run that wasn't earned, two walks, and struck out two of 16 batters.
 
GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Wolves were the first to strike in game two when Martin singled to right field to score Fairbairn followed by Bodak reaching due to an error by the third baseman to score Conklin and then Zimmerman drawing a bases loaded walk to score Martin in the second inning and make it 3-0 WOU.
  • Still in the second, Hommel singled to left field which scored Nelson followed by Mauer reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Bodak and gave the Wolves the 5-0 lead.
  • Joelie Eder began the 'Cats response in the bottom of the second with a double to left center field which scored Flores followed by Cable singling up the middle to score Eder and Lizzy Turpen to cut it to a 5-3 game in favor of Western Oregon.
  • The 'Cats tied it up in the third after Flores doubled to right field to score Thomas followed by Eder sacrificing herself to the shortstop to score Flores and make it a 5-5 game.
  • Martin gave the lead back to WOU in the sixth when she singled up the middle which scored Morgan Voll and made it 6-5 Wolves.
  • CWU responded in the bottom of the sixth when Cable doubled to right center field to score Holdren and Vargas followed by Brusseau singling to right field which scored Cable and helped the 'Cats secure the 8-6 victory.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable led the 'Cats with four hits while Brusseau added three and Flores tacked on two.
  • Holdren, Baker, Thomas, Turpen, and Eder all had one hit for CWU>
  • Cable had four RBI while Eder had two and Brusseau and Flores added one.
  • All three walks for the 'Cats were drawn by Vargas.
  • The Wolves saw Hommel, Fairbairn, Conklin, and Martin all log two hits each while Schneidt added one.
  • Martin had two RBI while Bodak, Zimmerman, Hommel, and Mauer all had one each.

  • Ellie Gilbert pitched the final three innings allowing three hits, one run, and one walk against 13 batters.
  • Penny-Lew Barnett pitched the first three innings for the Wolves allowing eight hits, five runs, two walks, and struck out three of 19 batters.
