Wildcats get Swept in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Central Washington University Softball Team suffered a pair of defeats on the road Friday to the Western Washington Vikings.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Maleah Andrews got WWU on the board in the first inning with a double to left center field which scored Payton Chacon to make it 1-0. 
  • Laila Carpenter began a run in the second inning with a home run to left center field which scored Rachel Traxler followed by Chacon scoring on a wild pitch, then Emily McCutcheon singling down the left field line to score EmmaJoy Wise and Hailey Rath to make it 6-0 WWU.
  • Still in the second, Haylee Kim reached on a fielding error by the second baseman which scored Olivia Matlock followed by McCutcheon scoring on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 8-0 WWU after two innings. 
  • Kayle Brusseau put the 'Cats on the board in the third with a single to the shortstop which scored McKayla Cable to make it 8-1 WWU.
  • The Vikings added on in the bottom of the third when Andrews tripled down the left field line to score Chacon followed by Andrews stealing home to make it 10-1 WWU.
  • Jessica Reitz-Eaton sacrificed herself to the third baseman to score Izzy Vargas and make it 10-2 in favor of WWU.
  • The Vikings wrapped up the game when Carpenter singled up the middle to score Kim and make it 11-2 in favor of the Vikings. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable, Brusseau, and Brooke Baker all had one hit each for the 'Cats.
  • Brusseau and Reitz-Eaton each had an RBI.
  • Vargas and Lizzy Turpen each drew two walks while Cable, Baker, Brusseau, and Jadyn Holdren all drew one walk. 
  • Andrews and Carpenter led the Vikings with two hits each while Chacon, Matlock, McCutcheon, Kim, and Traxler all had one hit each. 
  • Carpenter had three RBI while Andrews and McCutcheon each had two RBI.
  • Chacon and Wise each drew two walks while Andrews and Rath each drew one. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Reese Anderson pitched 1.2 innings allowing three hits, six runs, and four walks against 13 batters.
  • Alex Flohr pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing six hits, five runs with three earned, two walks, and had a strikeout against 17 batters.
  • Alanna Wirtala pitched the first three innings allowing three hits, one run, two walks, and had three strikeouts against 14 batters.
  • Mac Ferguson pitched the final two innings allowing no hits, one run, and six walks against 11 batters.
 
GAME 2: 
 
SCORING:
 
  • Andrews put the Vikings up in the second inning with a single to right field to score Traxler and Chayse Flick-Williams and make it 2-0 WWU.
  • In the fourth inning the 'Cats got on the board when Vargas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Cable and make it 2-1 WWU.
  • Kasi Thomas tied it up in the sixth inning with a double down the left field line which scored Baker.
  • The Vikings won it in walk off fashion in the seventh when Matlock sacrificed herself to the right fielder which scored Rath to give the Vikings the 3-2 win. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • Cable and Thomas led the 'Cats with two hits each while Brusseau added one.
  • Thomas and Vargas each had an RBI.
  • Baker, Thomas, and Vargas all drew one walk.
  • Traxler led the Vikings with two hits while Chacon, Andrews, and Rath all had one.
  • Andrews had two RBI while Matlock had one.
  • Seven different Vikings drew a walk each.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched all 6.2 innings allowing five hits, three runs, seven walks, and earned two strikeouts against 32 batters.
  • Evalyn Massena pitched the first 3.2 innings allowing four hits, one run, and one walk while striking out two fo 14 batters.
  • Wirtala pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing one hit, one run, and two walks while striking out four of 14 batters.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • WWU now leads the all-time series 93-78.
  • The Vikings are on a six-game win-streak.
