Central Splits Second Doubleheader Against WOU to Break Even on Series

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Central Washington University baseball team split a doubleheader with Western Oregon on Sunday, holding on for a 4-3 win in the opener before falling 10-4 in the finale to break even in the weekend series against the Wolves at the WOU Baseball Field.

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Central didn't take long in the first inning after Kaiden Hernandez and Logan got on base as Kellen Berg got a single into left field to drive in Hernandez from second base to give CWU the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Wildcats continued their scoring in the second inning after Jake Lockwood walked. Andrew Charron and Hernandez hit back-to-back groundouts to advance Lockwood to third base. Then, a wild pitch from Josh Johnson allowed Lockwood to advance and score to give the Crimson and Black a 2-0 lead.
  • CWU kept the momentum going in the fifth inning when Kellen Berg and Max Bledy hit a pair of RBI singles to double the Wildcats' lead to 4-0.
  • Western Oregon responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on and two outs, Jason Olsen hit a single through the gap to drive both runners in to make it 2-4.
  • The Wolves got another run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Benny Nazario hit a sacrifice groundout to allow Jayger Baldwin to score from third base and cut the lead to one, trailing 3-4, but the 'Cats get the Wolve 1-2-3 in the ninth to win the game 4-3.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Kellen Berg led the Crimson and Black with two RBIs and two hits.
  • Max Bledy hit an RBI and two hits.
  • Kaiden Hernandez and Ethan Buckley recorded three hits each, and both scored a run.
  • Andre Garza and Jake Lockwood scored a run each.
  • The Wildcats reached base 13 times by hits and walks.
  • Jason Olsen led the Wolves with two RBIs and a hit, while Benny Nazario recorded an RBI and a hit.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Kyler Malnar pitched five innings, allowing two runs, four hits, and striking out two of the 20 batters he faced.
  • Drake Anderson pitched 0.2 innings, allowing zero runs, one hit, and striking out one of the four batters he faced.
  • Lance Mittelman pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one run, two hits, while facing seven batters.
  • Kellen Berg pitched two innings, allowing zero runs, zero hits, while facing seven batters.
  • Josh Johnson pitched 4.2 innings for the Wolves, allowing four runs, five hits, and striking out three of the 24 batters he faced.

  • Tough start for Logan Thompson after loading the bases in the first inning, he walked Collin Irwin and Benny Nazario to give WOU a 2-0 lead.
  • The Wolves found three more runs in the second after Alex Harden hit a three-run home run to take a 5-0 lead.
  • Western Oregon's offensive run continued in the fifth inning after getting a bases loaded walk and then Finn O'Connor singled to left field to score Nazario and then a throwing error allowed Darin Chapman to score. Chris Arce followed up with a sacrifice groundout to score O'Connor as WOU took an 9-0 lead.
  • The Wildcats found their answer in the sixth inning with Andre Garza and Ethan Buckley on base and Kellen Berg stepped up and launched a three-run shot to left field to get CWU on the board. It would be Berg's fifth RBI of the day. Andrew Charron followed up with a double to left-center field to score Conrad Henkel as Central trailed 4-9.
  • The Wolves got one more run in the bottom frame as Chapman hit a single to center field to score Jason OIsen, as Western Oregon would hold on to win game two of the doubleheader 10-4.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Kellen Berg led the Wildcats with three RBIs, one hit, and a run scored.
  • Andrew Charron recorded one RBI and a hit.
  • Ethan Buckley recorded three hits and a run scored, while Logan Blank and Andre Garza tallied two hits each and Garza scored a run.
  • Four other Wildcats recorded a hit each, including Max Bledy, Conrad Henkel, Kaiden Hernandez, and Jake Lockwood.
  • The Wildcats reached base 13 times by hits and walks.
  • Alex Harden led the Wolves with three RBIs, a hit, and a run scored. Six Wolves including Chris Arce, Darin Chapman, Collin Irwin, Tyler Mohler, Benny Nazario, Finn O'Connor recorded a hit each.

  • Logan Thompson pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four runs, two hits, and walking four batters.
  • Jackson Burtis pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, three hits, and striking out one of the 12 batters he faced.
