ARCATA, Calif. - The Central Washington University Women's Soccer Team (0-2) showed a strong offensive presence, but could not find the back of the net, dropping its matchup against Stanislaus State (1-1) 0-2 Saturday afternoon at College Creek Field.
QUOTING CWU HEAD WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH JOHN HAWKS:
"It's early in the year and the reality is we're making the right mistakes. Meaning, we out shot Stanislaus State 12 to 11 with both teams putting 7 on goal. That, along with the corner kicks being in our favor 4 to 2, and possession in run of play being 50/50.
These objective data points along with film will give us what we need to improve. It's important we treat winning and losing as imposters and embrace the process of refining and getting better each day!
I'm really proud of our group's effort and how they show up for one another for a full 90!
They are high level student-athletes on the field and in the classroom. As the head coach it's on me to do better so they learn and apply the lessons from this weekend as we prepare for Denver Metro next Thursday…Go Cats!"
FIRST HALF:
Stanislaus State found offensive chances early on in the first half when Lorena Moreno got a shot on goal that
Danika Galbraith saved on the bottom left at 6:09. Aliah Avila got another shot on Galbraith at 14:41 to the bottom left but the goalkeeper stood strong. Central got its first shot on goal at 27:02 when
Marisa Badillo got a shot to the center of the Warriors' net, but Zara Mujica made the save.
Kylee Schreck got another shot on net at 30:57, also saved by Mujica. Then, at 38:10, Stan State found the opening goal when Hibah Elbeshity found Avila between the Wildcat defenders to get on a breakaway and score on Galbraith on the left side to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Stanislaus State got another shot on goal when Grace Vojkufka shot on the center and Galbraith made the save. Then,
Alexa Stanfield got a shot for the 'Cats on the bottom right that was saved by Mujica to close out the first half. The officials access one yellow card for the first half to Stan State's Alyssa Hernandez at 23:49.
SECOND HALF:
The second half saw Central find more offensive opportunities. Two back-to-back shots happened at 71:41 from
Haley Engstrom, and 72:22 from
Jaylee Reynolds; both shots were saved by Mujica. Haylee Sousa found a shot on goal at 80:12 but Galbraith made the save.
Mary-Jo Landon made an attempt on goal at 83:53 that was saved by Mujica. Then, the Warriors put away the game with an 85:27 goal from Olivia Maragos, assisted to Mandy Thao and Moreno. Maragos got one more shot on goal before the match ended with Stan State taking the 2-0 win. Two yellow cards were handed out in the second half, both to Stan State players Lorena Moreno at 60:56, and Olivia Kamm at 68:04.
SERIES HISTORY:
- Stanislaus State now leads the all-time series 7-0.
- CWU is 2-4 in Arcata.

The Wildcats come home next week to host CWU Women's Soccer Tournament starting on Thursday, Sep. 3 as they take on Metro State. Kick-off from Tomlinson Stadium is set for 5:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the Saint Martin's- UC Merced match.
