Joel Johnson joined the Wildcat baseball program in the fall of 2012. Spending time at both shortstop and second base in 2013, Johnson helped the Wildcats to a runner up finish in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). His line of .324 with six extra base hits and 26 runs batted in (RBI) earned him second team All-GNAC honors. Johnson also worked one inning of emergency relief on the mound, striking out two batters.
 
Prior to CWU, Johnson played at Clark Community College (WA) for two seasons. As a freshman in 2011, he hit .276 with nine extra base hits and 11 RBI. Following the season, Johnson earned second team All-Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) west region honors and earned an NWAACC west region gold glove and a Pacific Association Division gold glove at third base. As a sophomore, Johnson played in every game for the penguins, hitting .220 with six extra base hits, nine RBI, and seven stolen bases.
 
Johnson graduated from Olympia High School in Olympia, Washington. Lettering three times for the bears and coach Todd McDougall, Johnson names Coach McDougall as the most influential person on his baseball playing career.
 
Johnson was born in Olympia, Washington to parents Daniel and Julie Johnson. He also has one sister, Maddie. Johnson is majoring in business at CWU with a specialization in marketing.
