Central Washington University: (2014): In his first season with the Wildcats Welch was a standout both at the plate and on the mound...Welch started in all 46 games he appeared in posting 48 hits with 3 doubles, 4 homeruns, 19 RBI's, and 7 stolen bases...As the closer, Welch appeared in 18 games with 11 saves...In 34 innings pitched Welch recorded 39 strikeouts and an ERA of only 0.53...For his achievements on the diamond Welch earned the title of GNAC Newcomer of the Year and was selected to both the second-team Daktronics and second-team NCBWA all-west region teams...  
 
College of Southern Nevada: Prior to CWU, Welch played two seasons at the College of Southern Nevada. As a freshman for the Coyotes in 2012, Welch hit .288 with 12 doubles, three triples, five homeruns, 49 runs batted in (RBI), and nine stolen bases. On the mound, he appeared in seven games, striking out 13, with a 1.93 earned run average (ERA) and three saves. In his sophomore season in 2013, Welch repeated these good numbers, hitting .282 with 12 doubles, one triple, three homeruns, 27 RBI, and 12 stolen bases. Taking a slightly more significant role on the mound, Welch threw 16 innings, tallying 8 saves, 11 strikeouts, and a 0.54 ERA.
 
High School: Welch graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. A four-year letter winner for the Gaels, Welch helped the team to four Nevada State Championships in his high school career.
