Benny Boyd joined the Wildcats in the winter of 2015, and serves as the Wildcats special team coordinator and defensive backs coach.  Previous to CWU Boyd was the defensive and special teams coordinator at Aurora University in Illinois. 

Boyd was fortunate enough to spend the entire 2010 preseason working with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League as part of the Bill Walsh NFL Minority coaching Fellowship Program.  He coached defensive backs and special teams under the tutelage of Ray Horton and al Everest.  Following that season he was one of three finalist for the American Football Coaches Association Divsion III Assistant Coach of the Year award.
  
Boyd also spent three seasons at North Dakota (2011-13) and nine seasons with Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.  Boyd has coached six All-American players and 23 players who have received all-conference recognition.
 
He also played football at Aurora University from 1996-1999.  He was a four-year letter-winner and a three-year starter at cornerback for the Spartans.  Boyd was team captain for two years and was a two-time all-Illini-Badger Conference selection.  In his collegiate playing career he never lost a conference game and held the single-season record for passes defended in his senior season.  He graduated in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in social work, and again in 2002 with a master in social work.
 
Benny Boyd was born in Davenport, Iowa and is the youngest of six children.
