SPOKANE (Nov. 12) -- A total of eight Central Washington University cross country student-athletes have been named to the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country academic all-conference team, released Thursday by the conference office.
All eight Wildcats named to the team were women, and all boasts cumulative grade-point averages of 3.40 or above. The conference's minimum requirement to be eligible for the academic all-conference team is 3.20 or higher. Included among Central's honorees are three who earned honors for the third straight year, while one other was a repeat selection from 2008.
Sophomore
Adriana Mendoza (Zillah) has the highest cumulative grade-point average among the Wildcats' eight selections with a 3.95 GPA as a math education major. Senior
Shannon Vreeland (Port Orchard/South Kitsap HS), a three-time selection, has a 3.69 GPA in chemistry, followed by junior
Alex Borunda (Yakima/West Valley HS) with a 3.64 GPA in business administration.
Joining Vreeland as third-time academic all-conference team members were fellow seniors
Stephanie Cooke (Ellensburg) and
Mary Bakeman (Langley/South Whidbey HS). Cooke has a 3.49 GPA as a music major, while Bakeman is majoring in theatre arts and costume design with a 3.42 GPA.
Junior
Jessica Hirschkorn (Enumclaw) was a repeat selection this year with a 3.59 grade-point average with majors in art studio and public relations.
Making their first appearances on the academic all-conference team were Mendoza, Borunda, sophomore
Amanda Valera (Moxee/Zillah HS), and junior
Cindy Glenn (Battle Ground). Valera is a biology and chemistry major with a 3.56 GPA, while Glenn carries a 3.47 GPA as a social services major.
In addition to maintaining a grade-point average of 3.20 or above, student-athletes must be in at least their second year of competition at their current university and must compete in the GNAC championship meet.
Central Washington wrapped up its 2009 cross country season last Saturday (Nov. 7) at the NCAA Division II West Regionals in San Francisco, Calif., where the men finished 14th and the women were 18th.
