Late Second-Half Goal Dooms Wildcats

Box Score

ELLENSBURG (Oct. 30) -- The Central Washington University women's soccer team gave up a late second half goal and lost their home finale by a score of 1-0 against Saint Martin's University Thursday afternoon on the wet and cold CWU Soccer Field.

The Wildcats now stand with a 4-10-2 record, 4-7-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. With the win, the Saints improved to 7-9-0, 6-6-0 in the GNAC and extend their winning streak to three games.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as Wildcat senior goalkeeper C.J. Balstad (Port Orchard/South Kitsap HS) recorded a save on the only shot on goal by either team in the period.

The second half was more of the same until Saint Martin's scored at the 81st minute to give the Saints the 1-0 advantage. SMU forward Jill Webb got a give-and-go pass from teammate Kayci Donatelli and scored her conference-leading 12th goal of the season.

Offensively the Saints outshot the Wildcats, 15-13, and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. CWU junior Katelyn Scobba (Vancouver/Prairie HS) and senior Kaycie Hutchins (Port Orchard/Bellarmine Prep) both finished the game with a team-high three shots for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats travel to Monmouth, Ore., to play Western Oregon University this Saturday (Oct. 30) at noon. They will then wrap up the 2010 season a week later when they play at Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 6.
