CHICO, Calif. (Sept. 4) -- Senior
Kaycie Hutchins (Port Orchard/Bellarmine Prep) scored just 37 seconds into the match, but the Central Washington University women's soccer team managed just four shots the rest of the game and surrendered a pair of unanswered goals in suffering a 2-1 loss to host Chico State on Saturday evening at University Soccer Stadium.
"It was a disappointing start (to the season) for us," said CWU head coach
Michael Farrand. "We played well for the first 20 minutes of the game and the last 20 minutes, but the 50 minutes in between were rough."
Hutchins' goal in the first minute snapped a scoreless streak of 393 minutes in the head-to-head series versus Chico State, dating back to the series' first all-time meeting in 1999.
Central held a 1-0 lead for the majority of the first half, but Chico answered back as Lisa Webster scored on a cross from Denni Jo Berger and Michelle Grek in the 34th minute to tie the match at 1-1.
Chico State's game-winner came early in the second half when Molly Downtain scored on a deflected free kick from Carly Singer at the 49:46 mark.
Freshman goalkeeper Kori Butterfield (Duvall/Cedarcrest HS) started her first collegiate match for Central and finished with five saves on Chico's seven shots on goal. Chico outshot Central 16-5 overall in the match, marking Central's lowest shot total in a contest since Oct. 1, 2008 against Seattle Pacific.
Central Washington returns to action on Monday (Sept. 6) at San Francisco State at noon PDT.
